Volvo just announced that the upcoming XC60, S90, and V90 would feature an Android infotainment system developed by Google.
We first saw Googler’s Android infotainment system on the Volvo XC40 Recharge EV, but the XC60 is Volvo’s first mainstream model to have it as an optional feature. It would be offered as a part of Volvo’s Digital Service Package, allowing access to services like Google Maps, Google Voice Assistant, and Google Play Store along with the Volvo On Call connectivity application. Interestingly, Volvo mentions that these features won’t even require a smartphone to be accessed.
It is important to note that the Digital Service Package would remain active for four years from the date of purchase. After that, the owner would have to opt for said services for a premium. Volvo says that this infotainment system would also control more functions, including playing music, cabin temperature, and sending or receiving text messages using voice commands.
Volvo also added its new ChargePoint app to the infotainment system that should simplify the charging process. When using a ChargePoint charger, the application would eliminate the need for smartphones or credit/debit cards. Thanks to the dedicated app, drivers can also get a list of all nearby ChargePoint charging stations. Once there, they can select the right charger from the list and press the “start charging” button.
Volvo also claims that the new infotainment system supports its active safety systems. Indeed, new Volvo cars would now be able to communicate with each other more easily and detect other road users.
Talking about the XC60, Volvo has made some changes to its front and rear bumpers. There is a new grille up front, while the rear end receives a slight character adjustment. The dual exhaust pipes that were present on the previous models have been moved under the car. The 2022 Volvo XC60 is expected to go into production next May and be available in dealerships by the end of the year.
More details to come.
