The BMWs motorcycle history first began back in 1921. During that year BMW started production on the M2B15 with a twin engine. In 1922 the company merged with another and gained two motorbikes into its lineup. Their R32 had a large 486cc engine which put out 8.5 horsepower. The company used a revolutionary new engine system with a wet sump system and a drip feed to bearings. This same system was used until 1969. The BMW R32 was the foundation on which all other BMW motorbikes were built upon. It also introduced shaft drive into the motorcycle world.
In 1931 the R2 was introduced. It was a single shaft driven 200 cc motorbike and was the beginning of a series. After the end of World War II production was started again with new motorbikes. In 1948, the R24 was released. In the year 1949 alone 9,200 bikes were sold. In 1955 more units were released beginning with R50, R60, and the R69. The R60 and R69 both were 600cc units. In 1977 BMW released its “/7” models. They introduced 1000cc engine models and full fairings.
In 1983 there was a 897cc model released called the K100. It featured a four cylinder engine with water cooled injection. The first chain driven BMW motorbike was introduced in 1994 with the F650. There have been several changes recently as well and BMW is still producing several different models of motorbikes that are being driven around the world.
Being able to properly service a BMW motorbike is vital to keeping it running safely. Our BMW motorbike service manual was designed to guide you through any maintenance needed swiftly.
