Ford CEO Jim Farley just hinted at an all-new off-road supercar that could take the Raptor name in a whole new direction.
Ford might be cooking up something truly wild—a high-performance off-road supercar. That’s right, the carmaker known for its Raptor trucks and SUVs is considering taking things to the next level with a standalone off-road supercar. And if Ford CEO Jim Farley’s latest comments are anything to go by, this isn’t just some vague idea—it’s something the company is actively exploring.
Speaking to Top Gear, Farley hinted at the possibility of an all-new performance vehicle that would be completely different from anything Ford currently offers. “We’re in the middle of creating something, so we don’t have all the answers yet, but the question is: should Ford make an off-road supercar? Not a version of a car, a standalone supercar,” Farley said. While that doesn’t confirm anything, it certainly suggests that Ford is looking beyond just trucks and SUVs for its next big off-road machine.
Farley has made it clear in the past that he wants Ford to be the “Porsche of off-road,” meaning the manufacturer wants to dominate the high-performance off-road market the way Porsche does on pavement. The success of the Raptor lineup has already helped Ford establish itself as a leader in off-road performance, but it seems the brand isn’t done yet.
Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance’s global director, also weighed in on the idea, saying, “The mission of Ford Performance is to have as much motorsport as possible infused into the products that people can buy. We love that we have an F-150, Bronco, and Ranger Raptor, but we can do more.” He pointed to the Raptor T1+ Dakar race truck as an example of how far Ford can push its off-road technology.
Interestingly, this idea of an off-road supercar could be connected to rumors about a Baja-inspired Mustang concept. Last year, reports surfaced that Ford had shown dealers a lifted, off-road-ready Mustang with big tires. While there’s no confirmation that the Mustang will be the foundation for Ford’s off-road supercar, it’s possible that the two projects are related in some way.
So what would an off-road supercar from Ford look like? That’s the big question. Would it be something like the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato and Porsche 911 Dakar—essentially a road-going sports car with off-road capability? Or would it be something completely different, more in line with Ford’s history in off-road racing? Given the its success at Dakar, a purpose-built, high-performance off-roader with race-proven tech seems like a real possibility.
Ford hasn’t confirmed any production plans yet, and it’s unclear whether this off-road supercar will ever make it to the streets (or the trails). But the fact that top executives are openly discussing it means it’s something they’re seriously considering. Whether it ends up being a Raptor-badged sports car, a Baja-ready Mustang, or something entirely new, one thing is clear—Ford is looking to shake up the off-road world in a big way.
