The Volvo C40 Recharge is an all-electric crossover-coupe style vehicle based on the existing XC40 SUV, with sportier styling and a reworked roofline.
The C40 Recharge is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle, with no hybrid or combustion variants. Volvo was involved heavily in the production of the Polestar 2, but the tuner brand has evolved into a standalone manufacturer.
The C40 Recharge sits on the same CMA platform as the Polestar 2 but comes with a 78-kWh battery pack between the front and rear axles. Moreover, the two-motor version pumps out 408 HP and 486 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the C40 makes the 0-60mph dash in 4.7 seconds. Meanwhile, the top speed is limited to 112 mph, like all other Volvo vehicles.
Volvo says the 78-kWh battery pack is enough to provide 260-miles (420 km) of range in the WLTP-cycle. Moreover, a 150-kWh fast charger can recharge the battery from 0 to 80% in 40 minutes. While this is certainly fast, there aren’t many stations in Europe that support 150-kWh charging at the moment. However, although the true range will vary with real-world driving, Volvo plans to provide over-the-air software updates to gradually increase the range.
The C40 coupe-SUV draws inspiration from the XC40’s body, albeit with a different roofline. Moreover, there are stylish front and rear bumper changes, giving it an even sportier look. Other design changes include a small spoiler at the rear, below the windshield, with black accents all over the vehicle. The headlights have the usual Volvo form but come with the new pixel LEDs. Meanwhile, the rear brake lights extend from the middle to the very top of the car.
Inside the cabin, Volvo has opted to go for a leather-less look. Instead, the Swedish carmaker has opted for other soft materials, such as wooden fabrics. Like the XC40, the C40 Recharge will feature the same Android infotainment software. Google’s OS allows many applications like Google Maps and Google Assistant to work directly from the car’s system.
Volvo will produce the C40 Recharge in Ghent, Belgium, the same factory that produces the XC40. The C40 is also the first car available for booking exclusively on Volvo’s online website, meaning there is no showroom experience There are no details available on the prices yet, so stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks.
