Pickup Trucks Still Dominate US Sales

Unsurprisingly, Pickup Trucks Still Dominate US Sales

Of course, the F-150 still sits on top of US sales figures for 2020.

It is no secret that Americans love pickup trucks. After all, pickups always make it to the list of best-selling vehicles each year. Despite the global pandemic affecting car sales worldwide, the popularity of pickup trucks in America is still the same as usual.

In 2020, 5 out of 10 bestselling vehicles in the US were pickup trucks. If that doesn’t impress you, maybe the fact that the top three positions were occupied by pickups exclusively will.

Indeed, Ford’s F-series pickup trucks continue to dominate the segment as America’s best-selling vehicle, a position which it has been holding for the last 39 years. The Ford F-series pickup trucks sold a total of 787,372 units last year, significantly less than 2019’s sales figures of 896,526 units. However, in terms of sales figures, the F-series was miles ahead of its nearest competitors, the Chevrolet Silverado and Ram trucks.

The Silverado was chosen over other alternatives by 594,094 Americans in 2020, 3.2% more than in 2019. On the other hand, Ram pickup trucks witnessed a dip of 11% in sales figures, with 563,376 units sold in 2020, compared to 625,348 in 2019.

As a whole, a total of 14.5 million vehicles were sold in the US in 2020. These three pickup models alone make up 13% of the entire sales. This figure is enough to show that Americans still love riding pickup trucks.

The GMC Sierra grabbed the fourth spot with 253,016 units sold in 2020. It faced stiff competition from the Toyota Tacoma, managing to sell 238,806 units in 2020 and capturing the fifth and final spot on the list. Moreover, the Sierra and Tacoma ranked 9th and 10th in terms of America’s best-selling vehicles in 2020.

Ford will launch the fourteenth generation F-150 next February, keeping the F-series’ legacy alive in America. That being said, numerous EV manufacturers are about to release electric pickup trucks soon enough. Tesla’s Cybertruck is also scheduled to go into production this year and hit the markets by 2022. Consequently, it’s safe to say that pickup trucks should stay a very popular choice in years to come. On the other hand, whether or not the F-150 will keep the crown spot is still yet to be seen. Competition is bound to become even fiercer soon.
