Toyota has achieved another major milestone, recording 50 million Corolla sold, making it the bestselling car ever.
First launched in 1966, the beloved Corolla has been around for 55 years and spans over 12 generations. No need to mention that it has become more than just a car; it’s a household name. In fact, with 50 million units sold, the Toyota Corolla has long outsold the legendary Volkswagen Golf, which is yet to reach the 40 million mark—keep in mind that the Golf is 8 years younger, though. Still, practicality, reliability, fuel efficiency, and value for money are numerous traits that helped the Corolla become the best-selling model of all time, so much that Toyota now sells one every 28 seconds!
Toyota has been offering the Corolla in various body types, including hatchback, sedan, wagon, coupe, and even as a minivan (I had no idea either; check it out). Still, no matter the style, it always stayed true to its character—a reliable and somewhat comfortable daily commuter that doesn’t break the bank. Even today, the 2021 Corolla sedan starts at $20,025, while the sporty compact hatchback costs only $20,665. Customers who want more out of their Corolla can also opt for the range-topping XSE trim priced at $23,615 for the hatchback and $25,925 for the sedan.
And to make sure it caters to a broader range of consumers, Toyota now offers a multitude of engine options. The sedan is available with either a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 139 horses or a more powerful 2.0-liter engine rated at 169 horsepower. The latter is found in higher trim levels like the SE and XSE and is mated to a CVT or six-speed manual transmission, whereas the smaller engine option only gets the CVT.
Corolla’s highly functional interior has always been a highlight too. In the latest generation, it is nothing fancy, but it offers superb ergonomics with comfortable seats and ample legroom. Higher trim levels also come with synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, making it a bit more convenient for those who want some extra comfort.
In addition, the Corolla’s state-of-the-art Entune infotainment system is user-friendly and compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, Wifi hot spot, and satellite radio. Customers can also opt for a bigger 8-inch touchscreen, a nine-speaker JBL sound system, a moonroof, and an extra USB port.
Currently, there are 12 production plants across the world manufacturing the people’s favorite, and with the 2022 Toyota Corolla hybrid knocking at the door, it will be interesting to see whether it lives up to the reputation of its ICE counterparts. One thing’s for certain, with 50 million already sold, the Corolla should keep on dominating the global market for years to come too.
