Based on the 992-generation 911 platform, the GT3 R racing monster with a 4.2-liter flat-six engine is ready to debut next year.
Long gone are the days when race cars were all about speed. With categories like FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA SportsCar Championship dominating the field, automakers must focus on traits like durability, drivability, and stability. The new Porsche 911 GT3 R has come ready with all these features bundled in a neat package.
With developments beginning in 2019, the 911 GT3 R features many tweaks that will come in handy during the racing season. From the new suspension to a naturally-aspirated engine, the 911 GT3 R has many surprises.
“Our task was less about making the new 911 GT3 R faster…,” said the project manager. Porsche’s main plan was to improve its drivability and handling — the car’s impressive aerodynamics will optimize balance and enable customers to drive the racing car fast for longer.
Even when aiming for better balance and overall performance, Porsche did not miss an opportunity to boost power. The 911 GT3 R is loaded with a 4.2-liter, water-cooled flat-six that produces 557 hp. The engine is naturally aspirated, meaning there are no turbochargers. Meanwhile, the six-speed gearbox with paddle shifters arrives from the 911 GT3 Cup.
While the engine stays in the rear, Porsche has made a few modifications to improve stability. Namely, the powertrain now sits forward by 5.5-degrees, making more space for the underbody diffuser. Also, apart from more power, the torque is now perfected for better acceleration out of a corner. As for the new suspension, it promises lesser wear and tear for the tires and enhanced steering.
Furthermore, the longer wheelbase increases stability, especially in faster corners. The automaker has placed the rear wheels farther back from their old position, resulting in a 2.507 mm wheelbase. Meanwhile, the braking system — 15.35-inch discs, six-piston caliper in the front and 14.56-inch discs, and four-piston caliper at the rear — combined with the upgraded ABS will contribute to less tire wear.
The aluminum-steel composite design and carbon-fiber body give the perfect aerodynamic shape to the 911 GT3 R. Following the FIA mandate, the seats will now be closer to the center; also, the pedals are adjustable on the longitudinal axis.
Set for the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the new Porsche comes with a price tag of $567,210 and can be purchased only in the US and Canada.
