Mercedes already has a very clear plan laid out regarding its future EQ full-electric lineup, including EV variants of each conventional model from the A-class to the G-class. The EQC, based on the GLC, was the first one of the lot to be released. Now the manufacturer moves another step forward, confirming the release of its new electric subcompact SUV called the EQA, based on the GLA.
The EQA features the best Mercedes has to offer at the most affordable price possible. The vehicle is perfect for those still new to EVs and should prove to be a lot of fun to drive. Unfortunately, with the European launch imminent, it’s still unsure whether Mercedes plans to release the EQA in the US market. However, rumors suggest the manufacturer might be working on a unique North-American variant, specifically designed to appeal to US customers.
The Mercedes-Benz EQA comes with a 66.5 kWh battery pack, good enough for an impressive 300 miles of range base on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Translated into realistic numbers, it is expected that the battery pack will provide 200-250 miles of real-life range, still quite impressive for an entry-level electric vehicle.
The EQA250 will be the base model, equipped with a front-mounted electric motor pumping out 187 HP and 277 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the GLA, this is a little less power but more pull. That being said, if the vehicle is going to be released in the US, Mercedes is expected to provide a more powerful drivetrain to lure customers in and get ahead of the competition.
Although the EQA has more torque than the conventional GLA, top speed and acceleration are electronically limited to reduce power consumption. Nonetheless, it’s believed that Mercedes is looking to release a twin-motor all-wheel-drive variant producing more than 250 HP, at some in the future.
The cabin is also significantly modernized, now with the round push-buttons removed in favor of an all-digital console, assisted by a stellar voice command system. Buyers can also choose between a 7.5-inch or a 10.2-inch touchscreen display, along with Mercedes’ second-generation MBUX infotainment system.
Despite all its interesting features and impressive battery range, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQA will start at a reasonable $57,750 and be manufactured in China and Germany. Now, we can only wait to see what changes Mercedes make, if it decides to release the model in the US, and how it may perform against other big players such as Tesla and Ford.
