2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S: A Practical 503hp Little Beast

The AMG nerds in America would have noticed the GLC 63 S was only exclusive to the Coupé model. Thankfully, that will not be the case anymore since the regular GLC 63 S joins the GLC lineup for 2022. The company finally decided to fulfill customers’’ demand, with first deliveries commencing in Q4 2021 at a price Mercedes-AMG has not yet determined.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has been the brand’s best-selling SUV model for a few years, and it is easy to see why. It has a compact size that’s great for maneuverability and a decently large space to accommodate a small family. However, although it appears to have the same shell, the AMG-powered GLC 63 S is an entirely different animal from its non-AMG siblings.

Powertrain

The GLC 63 S has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, producing a massive 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. It is the same engine as the GLC 63 S Coupé. The 9-speed automatic gearbox and the intelligent 4MATIC+ AWD system are equal as well.

As a result, the 0-60 mph sprint takes just 3.6 seconds, and the top speed stands at 174 mph. Consequently, it’s quite a thirsty beast, as it averages only 15 MPG/city and 22 MPG/highway.

You would also find the driving experience to be on the sporty side. It has an AMG-tuned suspension, electronically controlled locking differential, dynamic engine mounts, and optional ceramic brakes. Hence, you can expect enhanced grip and stability during high-speed cornering.

Exterior

Some people may favor the boxy shape, but it definitely lacks the charm of the Coupé. Nonetheless, it is a handsome-looking SUV, and we like the part where Mercedes maintained its poshness, even with the AMG bits and pieces.

Although the changes are subtle compared to the non-AMGs, they are enough to add a meaner look. Like the Coupé, the aggressive front bumper is present, as well as an adjustable exhaust, 20-inch alloys, and a more advanced lighting system.

Moreover, AMG enhancement packages like Night Package, Carbon Fiber Package, and Aerodynamics Package are optional extras.

Interior

Space is one of the main reasons Mercedes has finally brought in the 63 S to the regular GLC lineup. While adopting the most charismatic engine, customers also crave the practicality of the boxy GLC. In fact, without the Coupé’s sloping roofline, the GLC 63 S now has more headroom for rear passengers and more cargo space.

Apart from the more generous space, you’ll find the rest of the features very similar to the GLC 63 S Coupé. It has high-quality Nappa leather sport and seats LED ambient lighting; there is also a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen MBUX infotainment system with AMG RACETIMER and Track Pace.

Overall, the interior has classic C-Class characteristics. It is nicely laid out, features premium materials, and provides an ergonomic driving position. Besides, customers can opt for a more advanced AMG Performance Seat Package, MBUX interior assistant, and an AMG head-up display.

Safety and Driver Assistant

Mercedes has never compromised on safety, especially on its high-performance AMG models. Features such as 7 airbags, electronic stability and traction control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning system, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard.

Furthermore, the GLC 63 S features advanced driving assistant features, such as automatic parking assist, speed limit reminder assist, and surround-view camera system. You could also opt for the Driver Assistance Package for a semi-autonomous drive.

Warranty and Services

Mercedes will cover your GLC 63 S purchase with a limited warranty of up to 4 years/50,000 miles, without complimentary scheduled maintenance. However, you can opt for some Mercedes-Benz Star Service prepaid maintenance packages, ranging from 2 years/20,000 miles to 4 years/40,000 miles.

Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S

Price

Considering the price difference between the existing GLC 63 S Coupé and the non-S GLC 63, we could at least expect it to be at the low $80,000 mark. Pricing details are going to be confirmed in the next few months.

Final Words

Based on the compact and practical GLC-Class, the GLC 63 S might be the bonkers family SUV we were waiting for. Mercedes-AMG has once again proved that sports car thrills don’t always have to sacrifice space and functionality.

However, if you are in the market for a compact performance SUV, you owe yourself to check out the competitors. For instance, there is the sharper-to-drive Porsche Macan Turbo, the more spacious BMW X3 M, and the slightly more powerful Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

Alternatively, maybe you already love the charisma of the AMG’s V8 engine but wish to have a larger interior space and have more money to burn. In that case, the bigger brother GLE 63 S should suit you.
