The American-made 2023 ID.4 Standard is finally here, and it will be one of the cheapest electric SUVs on sale, starting at $38,790 (including the destination fee).
But the entry VW ID.4 Standard also qualifies for the $7,500 US Federal tax credit, lowering the price to $31,290 — not bad for a spacious and emission-free family SUV! For comparison, the much smaller Chevy Bolt costs $25,600, while the Nissan LEAF hatchback starts at $27,500.
Unsurprisingly, you might wonder what the catch is in this deal. Well, the standard ID.4 features a smaller battery and subsequently a lower range, but otherwise, the model is similar to the higher-end Pro version.
Precisely, it packs a 62 kWh battery pack and a 201-hp rear-mounted electric motor. The combination provides a 208-mile range on a simulated EPA cycle, which seems fine for most people. However, customers who want more range can opt for the 82-kWh version, which provides a much-higher 275-mile range and comes with optional AWD.
Although the standard ID.4 is an affordable affair, it comes with a host of modern features, including rain-sensing wipers, LED headlights, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, heated cloth/leather front seats, a multi-color ambient lighting system, leather-wrapped steering wheel are all complemented by a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a centrally located 12-inch infotainment system. Other key features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless charging, a dual-zone AC, and a keyless entry system.
The ID.4 Standard also gets a variety of driver aid systems, such as Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Side Assist, Park Distance Control, and High Beam Control, along with Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Lane Keeping Assist, Travel Assist 2.0, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
Meanwhile, higher-end trims enjoy styling upgrades like gloss black accents on the front bumper and an illuminated light line, and VW emblems. In addition, heated rear seats and Park Assist Plus with Memory Parking are available exclusively with the S and S Plus trims.
However, the Pro saw a price increase and will now set you back $1,265 more, starting at $42,495. Furthermore, the Pro S’ price increased by $1,765 and now comes at $47,495.
The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard should hit dealerships this fall, and it will be interesting to see how it does. Will the market go for a smaller battery version or not? Only time will tell!
