Volkswagen’s new Taos sub-compact SUV is scheduled to be unveiled next month.
VW’s upcoming SUV is likely to have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is expected to offer excellent fuel economy along with great value and packaging. It would also contain advanced infotainment and driver-assistance features.
According to Volkswagen’s teaser image, it seems safe to suggests that the SUV would look similar to Tiguan, only smaller in size.
Commenting on the issue, Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President for Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America, said,
“We’re thrilled to announce the name for the newest member of the Volkswagen family. It was important to choose a name that really embodied the nature of the car, and the town of Taos, New Mexico, was a perfect fit. It’s a small city that offers big things—from outdoor adventure to arts and design and great cuisine.”
Dan Barrone, the Mayor of Taos, responded by saying, “We are excited that Volkswagen has named their sport utility vehicle after the town of Taos. It’s a great opportunity for our community to share its rich history and culture alongside Volkswagen with its unique and rich history and culture.”
The name of the SUV has specifically been selected while keeping in mind the North American market as the German manufacturer believes that the name will resonate with its American customers.
Interestingly, Volkswagen already has a similar model available in China, called Tharu. It is offered with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine producing 148 horsepower and a 2.0-liter engine producing 184 horsepower. Both variants come with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
More details are expected to be released after the Taos’ unveiling on October 13th.
