The VW ID.4 GTX intends to compete with Tesla Model Y Performance, packing two electric motors producing 295 HP, enough for a 0-62mph time in 6.2 seconds.
Volkswagen finally lifted the silk sheets off the newest addition to its SUV segment, the all-electric ID.4 GTX, at the digital World Premiere held at the Berlin Tempelhof airport.
Volkswagen claims that the ID.4 GTX was added to the company’s portfolio for two reasons. First of all, it states how involved the brand is regarding the shift in focus towards all-electric vehicles only. Secondly, Volkswagen wishes to bring home the idea that driving EVs can be as enthralling and fun as traditional gasoline-powered cars. Well, there is also a third reason as well—competing with Tesla.
The new ID.4 GTX is built on VW’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) and features two electric motors (one for each axle). It’s worth mentioning that it is the first member of the ID family to feature a four-wheel-drive configuration.
VW’s new electric SUV features two motors and the standard 77 kWh battery from the regular model. Such a setup is good enough for 295 HP, a 0-62mph sprint in 6.2 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 112 mph—unfortunately, that’s slightly short of Tesla.
Nonetheless, the ID.4 GTX received several stylistic upgrades for a sportier and more adventurous look. The black rear spoiler and roof with anthracite roof rails amplify the rugged look and impression that the SUV was born to rule the less-traveled roads. The headlight arrangement was also revamped, now showcasing honeycomb-style daytime running lights. Furthermore, pronounced 3D LED taillights, a fresh set of front and rear bumpers, and X-shaped brake lights finish off the stylish look.
Meanwhile, the cabin comes in a dark shade of X-blue with red accents. Volkswagen retained the large central infotainment screen in addition to providing a real-time heads-up display (HUD). The steering wheel sits behind a digital instrument cluster and houses an array of haptic push buttons. Besides, VW has taken extra care to put the GTX logo on different elements inside the cabin, including the steering wheel and the stitches on the leatherette.
Sadly, the ID.4 GTX is a forbidden fruit for the US and will only be available in Europe. However, the German auto giant has promised that the States would receive an equivalent model in the long term. Priced at € 50,415, the ID.4 GTX is a versatile and intriguing venture that does a little of everything right.
Let the waiting game begins…
