In a series of images, the Japanese brand teased its upcoming Solterra EV built on the e-TNGA platform.
While most automakers have already embarked on their EV journeys, Subaru was kinda slow to embrace the electric future. However, it looks like it’s finally set to make its entry into the electric game with the new Solterra compact SUV, previously known as the Evoltis.
Underpinning the Solterra will be a new EV-dedicated platform, known as the e-Subaru Global Platform (e-TNGA), built collectively by Subaru and Toyota. This modular platform can combine multiple components and modules, like the front, center, and rear of a vehicle, making it suitable for different battery-powered vehicles. Toyota’s BZ4X will also be built on the e-TNGA and, in fact, will be the first vehicle developed on this shared platform.
Although the teaser images don’t reveal many details, we can tell the Subaru Solterra closely resembles the automaker’s other SUVs. On the outside, it will be equipped with a muscular-looking hood, a front bumper with creases, slim LED headlights, and a roofline slightly arched towards the rear.
Interestingly enough, the name Solterra comes from combining two Latin words, ‘Sol,’ meaning Sun, and ‘Terra,’ translating to Earth. The automaker said that it chose this name for its SUV because it wants to show its appreciation for Mother Nature and further coexist with it, together with its customers. The name represents its commitment to deliver traditional Subaru EUV’s go-anywhere capabilities in an all-electric vehicle.
As of now, Subaru hasn’t revealed any information related to the upcoming EV’s powertrain, but the Solterra will most probably adopt a dual-motor setup and an all-wheel-drive configuration. The Solterra is scheduled to be launched in mid-2022 in the United States, Europe, Canada, Japan, and China.
We expect more details closer to the launch. We’ll keep you posted!
