Renoca Windansea: Give Your Toyota Tacoma a Classic Land Cruiser Makeover

Rather than restomodding the half-a-century-old FJ60 Land Cruiser, Flex uses Tacoma’s more modern architecture instead.

If you happen to have a Toyota Tacoma but are a fan of the classic Land Cruiser series, Flex Automotive has something for you. The body kit expert was born five decades ago in Japan and specializes in Toyota’s legendary off-roader and the Hiace people carrier. It mainly produces retrofit body kits for Land Cruisers dubbed the “Renoca,” short for “renovation car” — and they sure seem to know what they’re doing!

In 2022, Flex only offered three models in the US market but finally decided to add another model to the Renoca series — the Windansea. While the new fourth-gen Toyota Tacoma is just around the corner, the Windansea is based on the third-generation model (2016-2023), presumably because Flex developed this kit a bit late.

The changes start at the front with a rectangular grille with Toyota’s classic font instead of the rather prominent trapezoidal one. A pair of square headlight housings with the iconic circular headlights and square turn signals also replace the stock ones. And to complete the transformation, a new (old?) steel bumper is installed.

Flex hasn’t made any comment regarding which body panels would be replaced, but we can safely assume it needs a new hood, a set of boxier fenders, and all of the front fascia. On top of that, the Windansea also includes new side steps and new steel wheels with larger offroad tires.

Engine-wise, Flex listed Tacoma’s 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 278 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque, connected to a six-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels — keep in mind that the specs may vary depending on the donor vehicles. Still, you can further personalize your own Windansea with Flex optional extras such as lift kits, bed racks, fog lights, seats upholstery, sound system upgrades, and even floor mats.

The Renoca Windansea will be sold exclusively in the US, starting at $52,800 — but once again, this rate may vary based on the donor car’s price and how wild you go with the custom stuff.
