Powertune Australia’s Toyota GR Yaris Makes 740HP from its 1.6-Liter 3-Cylinder Engine

Powertune Australia’s tuned GR Yaris is a literal pocket rocket with three times the power output of the stock engine.

After the world was introduced to the Toyota GR Yaris, many fell in love with the little rally-homologated hatchback. Indeed, with its juicy turbocharged 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine producing a mouthful 268 hp paired to a six-speed manual box and an impressive AWD system, what’s not to like? The superb G16E-GTS engine also unlocks a whole lot of possibilities. And yes, it is the same engine as the GR Corolla, for everyone living in the US, where Toyota decided not to sell its GR Yaris. Today, we’ll delve into Powertune Australia’s incredible tuning work on this already impressive car.

About Powertune Australia

Powertune Australia started in 2005 and is all about making cars faster, especially those with turbochargers. They’re in Eastern Creek, South-West Sydney, just a short drive from Sydney’s city center, right by Sydney Motorsport Park and Sydney Dragway.

Since the beginning, Powertune has been winning races and building a strong reputation for creating amazing cars that people love. They do all kinds of car services, like fixing engines, custom wiring, and making engines more powerful. They’re a one-stop shop for car enthusiasts, and they know their way around Japanese sports cars.

Whether you want a fast car for the street, the racetrack, or to show off, Powertune is all about making sure you’re happy with how your car performs. They can always find the perfect balance between how a car works, how well it’s tuned, and how easy it is to drive.

Toyota GR Yaris, Made More Hardcore

Indeed, we’ve all already seen tons of tuned GR Yaris producing 300+ hp, but we’ve never seen one this powerful yet. However, Powertune just unveiled its tuned GR Yaris, producing 740 hp – that’s the same output as a Lamborghini Aventador S! No need to say that pumping out 246 hp per cylinder from such a small 1.6-liter engine is no easy feat.

And while you may expect Powertune to have given the internals a massive rework to handle supercar power, that’s not really the case. In fact, the Australian tuner only fitted its GR Yaris with a 58mm Garrett G30-770 turbo, an upgraded head gasket, and new head studs while retaining the standard rods, cranks, and pistons. It also added a new turbo exhaust manifold, intercooler piping, and dump pipe made by Golebys Parts to comply with the humongous turbo and a new Plazmaman intercooler, Elixr Brushless fuel pump, and Akrapovic cat-back exhaust system.

Of course, more power requires more fuel; hence, the tuner replaced the stock secondary fuel injectors with Bosch’s 2,200 cc ones, and a Motec ECU was thrown into the mix to ensure everything worked in unison.

Transmission-wise, the stock unit would probably not be able to handle such power, so Powertune replaced it with an X-Shift six-speed sequential model with an ATS Triple plate carbon clutch for added durability — good call.

Overall, this Australian GR Yaris is surely one of the wildest of its kind to date. Sadly, just like we couldn’t get the stock GR Yaris in the US, it’s pretty unlikely we’ll get to see one with such a sick set of mods on our side of the ocean.

Can I Buy These Mods?

That said, if you own a GR Yaris and are intrigued to have your car tuned similarly to Powertune’s, the Australian tuner will actually sell you some of the mods applied. Here are some of the items and the prices (in AUD):

  • Motec M142 Plug-In Kit ($6,812.62)
  • RT23H2160-11S ATS Twin Plate Clutch ($2,781.09)
  • Ethanol Flex Sensor Kit ($586.36)
  • Powertune Can Gateway Box + Adapter Loom Bundle ($1,954.55)
