Mercedes-Maybach S680 Prolongs the Life of the V12 Engine

The V12-powered 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S680 is an absolute beast and Daimler’s luxury sedan flagship.

Moving the Maybach badge into a very special trim level of Mercedes-Benz vehicles turned out to be a good move. The V8-powered Maybach S580 was among the best-selling sedans in the very upscale luxury sedan segment. Its massive twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 was good for 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, but the German automotive giant wasn’t done with it yet.

The 2022 S-Class comes with a more powerful variant, the S680. Powered by a massive handcrafted twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 derived directly from the previous generation S650, this sedan blends both performance, and luxury. The Mercedes-Maybach S680 produces a whopping 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, while a nine-speed automatic transmission sends all that power to both axles, directing 69% of its torque to the rear wheels.

Despite being a car solely built for luxury and comfort, the S680 is no slouch either, hitting 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.4 seconds. It comes with an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, but it isn’t a real drawback since the S680 isn’t really built for speed anyway. On the other hand, Mercedes also makes sure the sedan’s massive size does not affect its maneuverability at lower speeds as rear-axle steering helps in reducing the turning circle.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the Mercedes-Maybach S680 closely resembles its V8 cousin, but it does come with a V12 badging to highlight the extra power and exclusivity. Apart from that, it features a unique grille and stainless steel trim covering the lower intake, side sills, and rear bumper to stand out further. Mercedes also offers the S680 with a two-tone paint finish separated by a hand-drawn dividing line and a revised palette of 10 brand-new colors.

When it comes to the cabin, it doesn’t get any more luxurious than that. The Mercedes-Maybach S680 features premium Nappa leather on almost everything starting from the steering wheels to the headliner, window frames, and pillars. And even though the S-Class is meant to be a chauffeur-driven car, the front seats do come with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. And with a massive 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment system, Mercedes ensures everything is accessible with just a touch.

The rear seats of the S680 take luxury to another level as customers get access to silver-plated champagne flutes, a refrigerator to store their bubbly, two 11.6-inch displays, and a tablet are available to keep them entertained. Furthermore, the S680 uses a state-of-the-art Burmester sound system paired with Merc’s MBUX rear-seat entertainment system.

The Mercedes-Maybach S680 4MATIC is expected to hit US dealerships by the first half of 2022, with prices starting from $184,900. We’ll keep you posted when it reaches US shores!
