The Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet would probably have a two-door body, although a “Landaulet” four-door version is also possible.
None of us can deny the wave of nostalgia that hit us hard during the re-run of F.R.I.E.N.D.S, almost 17 years after the last episode aired. But you know what excites us more? When an automaker drops very subtle hints of bringing back our favorite models, which had gone out of production decades ago.
The joy of getting behind the wheels of an iconic model with an improved powertrain and new feels is almost inexplicable to someone who doesn’t share our enthusiasm. Sitting in such models is almost like a trip in a time machine down the memory lanes, and Mercedes just as might oblige us with the G-Class Cabriolet.
However, don’t get your hopes high yet. All we have right now is a hiring report from Mercedes and a few spy shots of a model that the brand might be working on. Though the evidence is limited, they do conclusively point in one direction. Namely, Mercedes is probably working on a G-Class Cabriolet. The G550 Cabrio would have two doors, although we are unsure if Mercedes sticks to the Landaulet body style as it did back in 2017 under the Maybach brand.
According to reports, Mercedes is hiring new engineers to work on a foldable roof system for its vehicles. However, that’s only a part of it. Where things get interesting is that the recruits would be working at Mercedes’s Graz factory in Austria. The Magna-Steyr facility happens to be the place where Mercedes assembles the G-Class SUV. All these heightened the speculations that the German marquee might be reviving the G-Class Cabriolet.
We have seen several variants of the G-Class off-roaders, including a two-door cabriolet, a four-door Maybach Cabrio, and a regular five-door SUV. But slowly, over the recent years, the two-door and three-door SUVs were disappearing. Mercedes had finally discontinued them in 2013 when the G500 Final Edition 200 marked the end of the Cabriolet era.
So, if the rumors are true, the G-Class Cabriolet might resurface again, diversifying and spicing up Mercedes’s current SUV line-up.
