Mercedes-Benz to Build Electric Sports Cars to Compete with Porsche

The oldest car manufacturer will soon go head-to-head with Porsche and Tesla sports EVs.

Mercedes-Benz plans to step-up its EV game by completely electrifying its sports cars lineup. News surfaced after the German manufacturer confirmed plans to reinvent the brand as a luxury-focused manufacturer.

Although many manufacturers choose alternative energy solutions such as hydrogen, battery-electric cars seem to be in the lead. In fact, most large manufacturers are already investing heavily in developing BEVs.

Apart from offering emission-free driving, EVs provide quicker acceleration, advanced technologies, lower running costs, and cheaper maintenance.

With that being said, Mercedes-Benz has been mildly active in the development of battery-electric vehicles until now. Nevertheless, it’s believed that the carmaker will soon be introducing new electric sports cars to its lineup.

Harald Wilhelm, Chief Financial Officer of Daimler AG, told Bloomberg that the company has a very comprehensive portfolio, including desirable sports cars that will also undergo electrification.

Meanwhile, CEO Ola Kallenius hinted that the brand plans to launch electric performance models later this month. Models that would be able to challenge Porsche’s full-electric cars. Moreover, Ola even stated that the company prepares an all-new electric platform for those vehicles.

Mercedes has much ground to cover in the EV world. Tesla, for instance, already has much more experience, resulting in better overall performance. Besides, other big brands, like Porsche and soon Audi, already have electric sports cars to showcase.

Mercedes must now execute a foolproof plan to counter, keeping in mind strict emission standards, technology, and performance, while making a bold impact on customers.

Benz’s plug-in hybrid supercar, the Mercedes–AMG One, will make its debut next year, along with an all-electric S-Class.
