Maserati MC20 Cielo

Maserati MC20 is a Seriously Handsome 621-HP Spyder

The MC20 Cielo not only looks sick, but it also has a roof that can switch from opaque to transparent and provides thrilling performance.

Maserati launches a spyder version of the MC20, carrying the Cielo moniker. It’s the second edition of the supercar, with an all-electric version coming soon.

Pushed by the same 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 ‘Nettuno’ engine as the coupe, the MC20 Cielo has enough oomph for exhilarating performance. Notably, the motor produces 621 hp and a staggering 538 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm, enough for a 0-60 mph run in 3 seconds and a 200-mph top speed. Power goes to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with blazing-fast reaction times.

Another crucial characteristic is that the MC20 weighs only 143 lbs (65 kg) less than the coupe, thanks to the significant use of carbon fiber and composite materials. As a result, the roadster should keep the coupe’s agile handling and fun-to-drive aspect.

Furthermore, Maserati refined the aerodynamics to give the spyder stability at higher speeds and keep the cabin quiet with the roof opened. Hence, with the top down, the driver would only hear the engine, without the usual wind noise.

Matching the mood of the road and the driver, the MC20 Cielo offers five distinct modes (Wet, GT, Sport, Corsa, ESC Off), accessed through the updated rotary drive mode dial on the tunnel. The touchscreen in the middle contains further suspension stiffness settings if you are inclined to tailor the MC20 Cielo to your driving habits.

But Maserati went a few steps further to ensure the MC20 Cielo could compete with other open-top supercars. For instance, the new Acquamarina three-layered color from the Maserati Fuoriserie customization program looks quite otherworldly and perfectly matches the Cielo’s dynamic design.

The real star of the show, at least when it comes to features, is the electrochromic roof, which can go from opaque to transparent with the click of a button, thanks to the Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. That way, you can enjoy the sky even when it’s raining outside. But if you still want the full topless experience, the roof can open/close in 12 seconds!

Adding more glam to the mix, the first 60 MC20 Cielo roadsters will be part of the PrimaSerie Launch Edition, limited to only 60 models. The unique model gets wheel rims coated in a special gold finish and PrimaSerie wording purely laser engraved.

The Maserati spyder has a huge legacy, dating back to 1952 with the A6G 2000, the company’s first convertible. Less than 50 years later, in 2001, the Maserati Spyder arrived with a sweet-sounding 4.2-liter V8. Fast forward to 2022, the MC20 is sure to carry the baton forward to ‘combine style and sportiness in line with the brand’s unique DNA.’
