Huawei Starts Selling its First Vehicle in China, the Seres SF5 Hybrid

Huawei presented the Seres SF5 hybrid at the Shanghai Auto Show, marking its entry into the Chinese automotive market.

In recent years, we have seen many tech companies showing interest in the automotive industry. This idea would’ve seemed absurd only a decade ago, but in the present market, it isn’t that surprising at all. Recently, Chinese tech giant Huawei had announced its plans to invest $1 billion in electric vehicle research and self-driving technologies. And to put things in motion, the company has taken the covers off its first-ever vehicle during the recent Shanghai Auto Show, the Seres SF5 Hybrid.

Before moving on to the details, one thing worth noting is that this vehicle is not precisely built fresh by Huawei. In fact, it is an updated version of the existing SF5 crossover, which was initially released in 2019. Nevertheless, the tech company played an integral part in developing the vehicle.

Huawei has built this range-extended crossover in collaboration with Cyrus and will be selling it across China through its flagship stores under the California-based Seres brand.

Judging by its appearance, it is clear that the PHEV is not one to catch everyone’s attention. That being said, it does feature some nice touches, including a mesh grille, swept-back headlights, and LED daytime running lights.

People might misjudge the SF5 based on its look but make no mistake; it packs some serious power. Equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine along with two electric motors, the Seres SF5 puts out 543 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0 to 62 MPH sprint in just 4.7 seconds. Moreover, it has an overall range of more than 621 miles and can drive for 112 miles on electricity alone.

Inside, the SF5 is equipped with heated front seats, an ambient lighting system, and a sunroof. Nested behind the two-spoke steering wheel is a digital instrument cluster. Of course, considering that it’s Huawei’s vehicle, it includes an advanced infotainment system. Additionally, it features a specially designed 11-speaker audio system and two subwoofers.

Seres SF5 Hybrid will be offered in two variants, with the cheaper single-motor priced at 216,800 Chinese yuan ($33,350), while the dual-motor model costs 246,800 yuan ($38,000). Interested buyers can test drive the PHEV from this week onwards, and deliveries will start from the beginning of next month.
