BMW had a lot to show off in Shanghai, including a next-gen iDrive technology, the iX all-electric crossover, and the M Sport variant of the upcoming i4 electric sedan.
The i4 will be a similar size to the 3-Series, and will first launch in China. However, BMW has confirmed that the electric sedan will hit other markets soon.
The i4 M Sport is not a full-fledged M model like the M3 and the M4—it’s only a sport trim level. Hence, it adds some design changes, starting with the front bumper with larger air intakes at the corners. Moreover, the rear-end bumper design receives a larger diffuser, while the sides get a black lower end.
BMW’s signature M badge is also present on the dual-finned fenders, followed by a black graphic strip running along the bottom. The i4 M Sport will come with 19-inch M lightweight wheels with blue outline hubcaps and matching brake calipers.
The auto manufacturer said that the M Sport package would be available for all three i4 models, including the M50, i4 eDrive35, and i4 eDrive40.
BMW still hasn’t provided official performance numbers for the i4 M50, but it previously confirmed a 0-60mph sprint in under 4 seconds. The i4 will pack a dual-motor setup of 523 HP. However, BMW was also keen to remind us that it didn’t develop the i4 to be quick in a straight line and provide its signature driving experience in the corners.
The i4 M50 should provide 300 miles of range in the EPA cycle, at least according to the manufacturer. That puts it slightly behind the Tesla Model 3. However, lower-end models will have lower power outputs and perhaps slightly better range.
BMW also showed off a special-edition BMW 7 Series Two-Tone with a 6.0L V12 engine at the Shanghai Auto Show, limited to 25 units.
