The Mustang Mach-E is now up to $4,000 cheaper — but will it be enough to outshine Tesla?
Ford officially reopens orders for its electric crossover, the Mustang Mach-E, also adding a couple of exciting updates, including a better price tag, a longer battery range, and the latest BlueCruise driving-assist tech, a new offer designed to fight off the competition.
The Standard Range model is now equipped with a 70 kWh battery, providing a higher EPA-estimated range of up to 250 miles for the RWD model and 226 miles for the eAWD variant. Meanwhile, the Extended Range Mach-E retains its 91.0 kWh lithium-ion battery, assumably still offering the same 300 miles of range.
That said, AWD models now receive an additional 45 hp, bringing their total power to 311 hp (232 kilowatts). Complementing the higher power is also a shorter charging time for Standard Range models, now going from 10% to 80% in just 33 minutes, thanks to the new faster DC charging capacity.
In addition, the US automaker will throw in a 90-day free trial for its BlueCruise hands-free driving feature with your Mach-E purchase. It’s essentially an ADAS allowing you to change lanes, without having to touch the steering wheel, just by activating the turn signal — neat offer indeed, but shouldn’t that be a standard feature instead?
That being said, it’s the second time Ford has lowered the price of its Mach-E this year. Both RWD and eAWD Select models are now down $3,000, while the Premium and GT models are cheaper by $4,000 — California Route gets an extra $1,000 discount.
It’s very possible that Ford’s move was forced by Tesla’s recent massive price cuts, triggering somewhat of a price war among EV makers. But unlike Tesla, which sacrifices its profit margins to boost sales, the Blue Oval goes with a smarter strategy, utilizing its Cuautitlán Izcalli, Mexico plant to reduce production costs.
Better yet, according to Detroit Free Press, customers who have ordered the Mach-E since the beginning of the year, whether they’re still awaiting delivery or have already received their Mach-E, are both retroactively eligible for the latest price cuts.
But will that be enough to fight off Tesla — let’s see about that.
