Audi has simplified the 2022 A8 and S8 lineup by ditching the V8 and plug-in hybrid models while introducing small upgrades across the board.
Audi has launched the refreshed flagship luxury sedans, the 2022 A8, and its steroid-injected sister, the S8, in the US. Although we knew what they were going to look like since November of 2021, Audi has finally disclosed the specs and features for the US-spec models.
At first glance, you’ll notice that the 2022 A8 has a wider single-frame grille. Moreover, the facelifted models now feature a more angular design for added sportiness. Audi also added a rear diffuser, highlighted by redesigned horizontal bars, and a new taillight design, while the powerful twin sister S8 adds quad exhaust tips.
Like most carmakers nowadays, Audi added an optional Black Optic Plus package on the 2022 A8 and S8, with black side-view mirrors, a four-rings logo, and 21-inch wheels.
Step inside, and you’ll find an interior oozing with elegance, with amenities you’d expect from a business class jet. The cockpit looks identical to pre-facelift models, covered in Valetta and Valcona leather and a new microfiber Dynamica material borrowed from the e-tron GT.
Furthermore, ventilated massage seats with lumbar support add to the luxurious experience on the 2022 A8; however, S8 customers can also opt for a four-seat rear comfort package, including a rear full-length center console and fold-out wing tables. An integrated digital remote is also included in the comfort package to adjust lighting and seating preferences.
Like the previous year’s models, a 10.1 inch upper and 8.6-inch lower touchscreen are standard on the 2022 A8 and the S8. Almost all features are operated via the two touchscreens, which isn’t the best solution while driving, but the industry is going that route, regardless.
Audi has made efforts to make the 2022 A8 and S8 a mobile office with the MIB 3 suite of infotainment technologies. Other features include LTE mobile Wi-Fi, a Traffic light monitoring system, and an Integrated Toll Module. Nonetheless, these efforts still fail to beat the mind-blowing technology in the new Mercedes S-Class.
Audi trimmed the 2022 A8 and S8 lineup to just two versions, getting rid of the A8’s V8 and plug-in hybrid variant from the previous year. There were also plans to include a W12 Biturbo variant, but the head officials at Audi chopped it off last minute. Still, the entry-level A8 L 55 TFSI comes with a capable 3.0-liter V6 producing 335 hp and 396 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the S8 will get a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, good for 563 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.
The 2022 A8 starts at $86,500, the same as the previous year’s model, while the 2022 S8 will set you back $116,900, or $14,000 cheaper than the previous year’s model. Unfortunately, Audi won’t offer the uber-luxurious A8 Horch to rival the Mercedes Maybach, as it’s a China-only affair.
The facelifted 2022 A8 and the S8 will soon hit US dealerships.
