BMW Motorrad Presents the Blechmann R 18

The formidable combination between BMW and Bernhard Naumann presents The Blechmann R 18, named after the Austrian customizer’s nickname.

The R 18 was crafted by the excellent hands of Bernhard Naumann, also known as Blechmann, which actually means ‘tin-man.’ You may remember him from his last masterpiece, the ‘Giggerl’ BMW R nineT, built a few years ago.

Blechmann likes to put together his thoughts directly into reality. “I draw my design directly on the object using the final material. This allows me to directly respond to the requirements and to keep an eye on the proportions at all times.” – said Blechmann.

Starting off with his vision of the R 18, he embarked on the design from the back to the front. He fitted a Kellermann stoplight while other add-ons include a spoiler, front fender, stock speedo in the cockpit, and customized handlebars.

Blechmann maintained the original frame and running gear of the R 18 but made some alterations. The new highly enhanced OEM fuel tank has been added but shaped a tad narrower, incorporating a pair of new indents.

The front embraces a magnificent outlined hand-shaped fairing, featuring fine details such as carved side sections, redesigned tank roundels, and aggressive-looking front turn signals. The headlights were also given a kidney-shaped design. The idea for this one may have been taken from his last custom bike, ‘Giggerl.’

A filament lamp was also added to enhance the old-school look portrayed by the classic boxer engine. Blechmann also added a forward-tilted headlamp, and the subtle black color and white pin-stripes really bring everything together.

Blechmann devoted a total of 450 hours in crafting and building the wonderful R18. However, he kept the original framework intact to keep a slight touch of the genuine design.

“As the production R18 was revealed, some people were complaining about the exhaust,” he says. “But I liked it and decided to integrate it into my own concept. So I mimicked the shape in my bodywork.”
