The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is bigger than its predecessor in every direction and will be available with two turbocharged engines.
BMW has finally taken the wraps off the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe. As expected, the second generation combines the dynamics and powerful drive of the 4 Series with a sleek and gorgeous-looking four-door rear-hatch design. In addition, the new model will be available in two variations—the 430i and the M440i xDrive.
Longer, Wider, and Taller
It’s not even subtle; the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe is quite larger than its predecessor. To be precise, it’s 5.9 inches longer, 1-inch wider, 2.1-inches taller, and the wheelbase is 1.8 inches longer.
The second-generation model’s body has also been specially designed to optimize aerodynamics. It comes with an active air flap control system, air curtains, and alloy wheels with a streamlined shape, contributing to better airflow. As a result, the drag coefficient for the 430i variant stands at 0.28, or 0.01 less than the previous generation.
Despite the larger dimensions, BMW managed to lower the overall weight of the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe. For that, it used a smart mix of lighter and stiffer materials, increasing the structural strength and rigidity at the same time. Notably, BMW has combined aluminum alloys used for the passenger cabin with extra steel to improve crash safety.
The Massive Kidney Grilles Are Here to Stay
On the outside, BMW maintained a similar design philosophy as in the previous generation model, but with a sleeker and sharper profile. And of course, the front end carries the large kidney grille, the same as the new M3 and M4, that recently garnered a lot of negative attention.
Furthermore, the accentuated creases and three-dimensional front design are the key elements that define the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe’s look. The stretched headlights and taillights are stunning, especially at night. Besides, the tapered roofline adds to the sportiness while maintaining the sleek profile of the four-door coupe.
The BMW M440i xDrive gets a few model-specific visual enhancements. For instance, the grille frame and exhaust pipe tips, and mirror caps are finished in Cerium Grey. There is also an M-specific rear spoiler, giving it a performance-oriented vibe.
The 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe Will be Roomier on the Inside
On the inside, the cabin is much more spacious than the coupe version, with increased headroom and legroom. BMW also incorporated five full-sized seats for higher practicality, and sport seats come standard, providing optimal support and comfort to the front driver and co-passenger. Heating and ventilation functions are available for both the front and rear seats, too.
Two BMW TwinPower Turbo Engines on Offer
The latest BMW TwinPower Turbo engines deliver power to the new 4 Series Gran Coupes. The 430i variant packs a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque for a 0-60mph time in 5.8 seconds.
Meanwhile, the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe comes with a turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 that produces 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, going the same sprint in only 4.4 seconds. In addition, the standard M Sport exhaust system’s sound should perfectly complement the driving experience.
Along with the 3.0-liter engine, the M440i also carries a mild 48-volt hybrid technology. The mild-hybrid tech not only increases efficiency but also sharpens the power delivery. Notably, the electric boost can instantly add 11hp during hard acceleration, although only for a short period.
The BMW M430i Gran Coupe will start at $44,800, whereas the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe will cost you $58,000 at the least. Both variants will hit the US market in August this year.
