This Classic Mercedes-Benz 280SL Gets a Modern Twist as a Luxury EV

The perfect way to enjoy a classic Mercedes without having to deal with its less-than-stellar reliability record.

Electric vehicle conversions are currently a popular trend, offering a sustainable solution to preserve classic cars by transforming them into electric vehicles. While there are enthusiasts who favor keeping the traditional internal combustion engine, Moment Motor, a boutique firm in Austin, Texas, has been pioneering in this field since 2017. They are now unveiling their latest electrified masterpiece.

The Mercedes-Benz Pagoda 280 SL Roadster, widely regarded as one of the most alluring cars of its era, is an ideal candidate for electric conversion, especially given its convertible design. Currently, the market lacks a significant presence of electric convertibles, making the electrified version of this classic Pagoda a highly anticipated and welcome addition.

Moment’s selection of the Pagoda for conversion was a deliberate choice. The company points out that the vehicle’s dimensions are ideal for accommodating a substantial battery pack, essential for an electric vehicle. Additionally, the Pagoda has always been synonymous with luxury and a seamless driving experience, qualities that align perfectly with the smooth and quiet performance of an electric motor.

The conversion process began with an intricate 3D modeling of the vehicle, utilizing advanced CAD software to design an EV platform tailored to the original design. Moment Motor meticulously ensures that the conversion maintains the car’s original weight distribution and driving dynamics. This precision allows for the integration of a 62-kWh battery pack, providing an impressive 175-mile range.

The 280 SL Roadster is equipped with a three-phase permanent magnet motor, delivering a robust 300 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque. This power is more than sufficient, given the Pagoda’s status as a luxury roadster rather than a pure sports car. The motor also includes an integrated control system, complemented by electrified brakes, steering, retro-style gauges, and modernized heating and climate controls.

However, this transformation comes at a premium price. The electrified Pagoda 280 SL is priced at $250,000. Opting for a conversion of a personally owned 280SL can reduce the cost by about $115,000. Beyond the price, owning an electrified classic convertible is undoubtedly a unique and conversation-sparking addition to any car collection. Moreover, the Pagoda’s original charm seamlessly aligns with the smooth and silent operation of its new electric motor.

All in all, Moment Motor’s electrification of the classic Mercedes-Benz Pagoda 280 SL Roadster is not just a technological feat but a harmonious blend of past and future. It preserves the iconic charm of a vintage luxury car while embracing the sustainable and innovative possibilities of electric mobility. This project stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of the automotive world, where the elegance of history meets the efficiency of tomorrow. For car enthusiasts and environmental advocates alike, the electrified Pagoda represents a captivating journey into a new era of classic car restoration and enjoyment.
