Say goodbye to range anxiety and frequent charging stops with the new king of range in the electric SUV class, the 440-mile capable Fisker Ocean.
Fisker just unveiled the 2023 Ocean, an all-new electric small SUV aimed to compete with the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach E. Its most interesting features include an attractive look inside and out, and a combined WLTP range of up to 440 miles on a single charge — the highest mark amongst all the electric SUVs currently on the market!
Sure, Fisker isn’t the most well-known automotive brand, but it’s been around since 2007 and launched its first car in 2009 with the Karma, a rather unique luxury plug-in hybrid sports sedan. The Danish automaker was founded by Henrik Fisker, who worked on the design of the BMW Z8 Concept and Aston Martin’s iconic DB9 — quite a portfolio.
Now back to the “Ocean.” Fisker offers the electric SUV with three trim levels: Sport, Ultra, and Extreme. The Sport variant gets a front-wheel drive configuration and a 275hp motor, good enough to launch the crossover from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the Ultra trim receives a four-wheel drive configuration and 2 motors, increasing the power output to 540hp, catapulting the Ocean from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Lastly, the Extreme gets another 10hp more, cutting the 0-60 mph time by 0.3 seconds. Unfortunately, Fisker is yet to disclose anything regarding battery capacity, but given the range it promises, it should be significantly bigger than its competition.
Design-wise, the Fisker Ocean looks just as futuristic as any other upcoming EVs, inside and out. Still, its main talking point is its signature solar panel roof, available on the top trim and claimed to deliver a yearly range of 1,500 miles. And while we’re still unsure of its ground clearance measurement, press pictures suggest it could be able to handle some light off-roading.
Overall, good news for Fisker and good news for customers, too — another electric crossover hitting the market and shaking things up a little can only be a good thing, right? Let’s just hope the Ocean will bring the automaker back on its feet after the Karma’s unfortunate flop.
Nonetheless, Fisker seems to have taken notes from its past mistakes and it shows when it comes to the pricing of its upcoming electric SUV. With price tags expected to be between $37,990 and $68,999, this one could have a much better chance to compete (and take the crown) in its specific segment.
To be continued.
