2021 Kia Ceed Upgraded with New Engine and Mild-Hybrid Tech

The European-only Kia Ceed hatchback gets a new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and a mild-hybrid 1.6-liter 48V turbodiesel option.

Kia just revealed its new logo and brand slogan and, by the same occasion, unveiled its refreshed European hatchback, the Ceed, featuring new tech and engine upgrades. The Ceed was first revealed at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, carrying the name Cee’d at the time. Later, Kia quit the apostrophe to make it easier for customers.

The 2020 Kia Ceed’s most significant update is definitely the new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 158 BHP, 14% more than the previous 1.4-liter mill, and 187 lb-ft of torque.

The 1.5-liter unit will also be available in the ProCeed, XCeed, and Ceed station wagon. Besides, customers can now choose between a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch as their gearbox of choice. Kia also offers an innovative Intelligent Manual Transmission option on the Ceed, Ceed Sportswagon, and XCeed, boosting efficiency thanks to the “clutch by wire” technology.

Furthermore, Kia also upgraded the diesel option. The 1.6-liter turbodiesel now features mild hybrid technology and a 48-volt battery pack for increased efficiency. The engine produces 132 HP and 207 lb-ft of torque when paired with the manual gearbox or 236 lb-ft of torque with the seven-speed dual-clutch.

The Kia ProCeed has also received an update, taking the same 1.5-liter petrol engine, in multiple trim levels like the GT and GT-line. Meanwhile, the XCeed is also available with the new gas engine, with an option for a hybrid drivetrain. Also, Kia replaced the six-speed manual gearbox with a seven-speed DCT in the Ceed’s GT variant. Ultimately, the Korean brand added a new Blue color option, with the default Track Red replaced by Frost Silver.

With all the changes bought to the Ceed line-up, Kia looks to solidify its name in the segment. The Ceed hatchback starts from £19,700 in the UK, while the Station wagon variant costs $20,400. Furthermore, the crossover XCeed starts from $21,050, while the costliest variant is the ProCeed, starting from $25,075.
