The Taos Basecamp features some rugged cosmetic tweaks on the outside and improved H&R off-road suspension for attacking uneven terrain.
The all-new Taos subcompact SUV is the smallest and one of the least expensive models in Volkswagen’s high-riding lineup, but it’s just as attractive and well-equipped as its siblings. There’s still some time for the SUV to go on sale in the US, but in the meantime, the manufacturer has given it a comprehensive off-road treatment in the form of the ‘Taos Basecamp Concept.’
The Taos Basecamp is a concept vehicle that capitalizes on the success of another Basecamp concept based on the Atlas SUV that VW unveiled in 2019. The VW Design Team created this one-of-a-kind off-road concept in Oxnard, California, to promote the subcompact crossover’s “adaptability and adventurous style” while also providing a glimpse of its future upgrade package.
Highlighting the handsome appearance of the new concept is an eye-catchy paint scheme called Waimea blue, complemented by gloss black exterior elements. A matte black hood and roof provide contrast to the body paint, so do the silver rocker cladding on the front and rear skid plates. Furthermore, bright orange linings over the front grille, mirror caps, Basecamp badging, and side decals round off the crossover’s cosmetic upgrades.
The Taos Basecamp also features an overhauled suspension set up courtesy of H&R Special Springs LP for improved off-road performance. Other new additions include a custom Thule Canyon XT roof basket outfitted with five Baja Designs’ off-road LED lights and Fifteen52-supplied custom Traverse MX wheels backed by 225/65R17 Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail.
Meanwhile, VW installed a Polytec custom cargo divider inside to carry your gears and stuff. The SUV also sports certain enhancements from an upcoming Taos styling package, such as extended fender flares with in-built splash guards, lower door skid plates, and a distinct Basecamp badge on the front.
The standard Taos subcompact SUV will arrive in the US by the next month, powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged I4 engine making 158hp and 249Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. Pricing starts from $24,190 for the base S trim and goes up to $35,440 for the range-topping SEL variant with 4Motion AWD.
