VW Reveals The ID.2all Concept – A Proper All-Electric Golf Coming Soon

The ID.2all Concept previews VW’s upcoming affordable electric hatchback with Golf-esque styling.

Volkswagen has once again introduced a new concept car, the ID.2all, which is essentially a preview of an upcoming compact electric car that would be part of its plan to release 10 new EVs by 2026, including this Golf-like EV concept.

Indeed, there’s no denying the upcoming electric hatchback looks quite inspired by Golf. Even size-wise, the ID.2all Concept is almost identical to the current Mk 8 model. However, like all electrified cars, this EV concept does bring a more futuristic and minimalist exterior design, with simple lines that also help with aerodynamics. Also, we definitely love the concept’s 3-door configuration and the wheels that are very similar to last-gen’s Golf GTI, almost like it tries to appear sportier than its gas-powered twin.

Inside, the ID2.all Concept also takes inspiration from the Golf, offering a spacious and practical cabin suitable for five adults with no lack of headroom or knee room. The interior looks just as minimalistic and modern as the exterior, with the usual large screens for the driver and infotainment display placed tidily. Let’s just hope it retains most of these features in the production model.

Interestingly, to maximize the cabin capacity, the German carmaker had to slightly tweak the MEB Entry platform the ID.2all uses from supporting a RWD system to becoming front wheel driven. Thus, the ID.2all will be the first model to try out these latest VW innovations.

It’s claimed the front-mounted electric motor will produce 223 hp, a slight increase compared to the base RWD ID.4‘s 201 hp. While battery sizes aren’t disclosed yet, Volkswagen estimates the electric hatchback will have a range of 280 miles, complemented by fast charging technology allowing the battery to be charged from 10-80 percent in just 20 minutes. In addition, the manufacturer says the ID.2all would go from 0-60 mph in under 7 seconds, with a top speed of 99 mph — not so impressive, but given it’s still a concept, there’s still room for improvement.

All in all, props to VW for its aggressive electrification plan, which is also far from over. Indeed, the Beetle maker promises a few more electrified vehicle reveals this year, including the new ID.3, ID.7, and long-wheelbase ID.Buzz.

“The ID.2all gives a preview of the new design language of Volkswagen, which is based on the three pillars of stability, likeability, and excitement,” said the Head of Design at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Andreas Mindt. As a result, we can expect the rest of the promised EVs to share a similar styling as the ID.2all.

The upcoming electric hatch is expected to be priced lower than €25,000 ($26,400), which, even for a base model, is surely intriguing. Yet, since we didn’t even get the ID.3 in the US, we set our hopes too high for the ID.2. Still, it would be great if VW could find a way to sell its compact EVs on our side of the ocean, though.

Finger crossed!
