Volvo’s successful XC60 mid-size SUV is getting a much-needed refresh as it approaches half of its life cycle, gaining new technology and design elements.
The Swedish manufacturer confirmed the revamped XC60, its top-selling vehicle since 2009, will go into production this May as a 2022 model year. However, Volvo hasn’t announced the exact date yet.
As expected, the new model gains many technological updates. The most significant is Volvo’s latest Google‘s infotainment operating system, which was first available in Polestar’s models and Volvo’s XC40 Recharge EV.
Since it comes from Google, the OS can run android applications, such as Google Maps, Google News, or Google Calendar. Moreover, the driver can interact via Google Assistant, which is probably the best voice-recognition software currently available.
The 2022 XC60 also receives a host of safety upgrades, such as Volvo’s latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform, using multiple cameras and sensors to detect other vehicles or pedestrians. Furthermore, Volvo’s ADAS can brake automatically or even avoid collisions.
The design changes Volvo made on the new XC60 are subtle, though. The only visible changes are the reshaped grille and front bumper. However, Volvo also now offers more color options both inside and outside. Moreover, customers can now opt for luxurious leather-free options and City Weave textile upholstery.
Under the skin, the XC60 remains the same as the pre-facelift model. Hence, in the US, the SUV will be available with three 2.0-liter engines. Notably, the base turbocharged T5 packs 250 HP, while the T6 trim adds a supercharger to increase power output to 316 HP. Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid T8 serves as the highest-end variant, packing 400 HP, thanks to the added electric motors.
Unfortunately, Volvo has not revealed the asking price yet, but the previous generation XC60 starts at $42,795 and goes up to $70,595.
More details to come soon.
