The Volkswagen T7 Transporter would probably feature mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with an electric variant coming later.
Volkswagen Commercial has been picking up pace recently, with the new T7 Transporter and Multivan confirmed for reveal in the coming weeks. The company also teased the all-new 2022 Amarok pickup truck earlier this week.
The teaser image shows a bar-like headlight in the front stretching from side to side like the ID.4 EV. Overall, it looks very similar to the 2016 Budd-e concept unveiled by Volkswagen and has many design changes over the outgoing T6.1. Although more rounded, the van is still boxy to maximize the interior space.
Some sources caught the prototype testing vehicle in September last year, showing a Golf-like dashboard design. This might indicate that the T7 Transporter will switch to the company’s MQB architecture, like its smaller sister Caddy.
The next-gen T7 Transporter may be available in more than one variant with a combustion engine, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. The combustion engine version will be a 2.0L diesel as the previous generations. Meanwhile, the PHEV variant might feature a 1.4L turbo-four next to an electric motor like the Golf GTE, producing a combined 242 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. A full-electric T7 Transporter is also possible and could be the newest addition to the company’s electric lineup as the ID.Buzz minivan will also be all-electric.
More information about the T7 Transporter and its Multivan variant should come out during the next few months. Many prototypes are being spotted on the roads, suggesting that the company is ready to launch its new commercial vehicles very soon.
