Volkswagen Reveals Talagon SUV, But It’s a China-Only Affair

Volkswagen Talagon is theGerman manufacturer’s biggest SUV yet, upping the Atlas/Teramont model.

Volkswagen believes that it needs to step up its game in China and pursue an aggressive SUV policy to diversify its catalog for Asian markets. Accordingly, the German automaker unveiled six new models at the Auto Shanghai, five of which will be SUVs like the all-electric ID.6 X and ID.6 CROZZ.

Interestingly, Volkswagen had already teased a bigger, more spacious SUV concept back in 2019. It seems to have delivered on its promise with the new Talagon, its biggest SUV to date. Measuring an impressive 202 inches long, 78 inches wide, and 70 inches high, the Talagon outsizes most of its competitors in the SUV segment. With a wheelbase of 117 inches, the same as the Volkswagen Atlas, the SUV can comfortably accommodate 7 adults based on a reconfigurable sitting arrangement. The stately dimensions and the large wheelbase are impressive, considering the fact that the Talagon is based on Volkswagen’s good old MQB Evo platform.

Volkswagen will reportedly offer a variety of drivetrains with the new Talagon. The top range model will sport a 2.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine attached to the latest DQ501 transmission. The arrangement allows for a 7-speed full automatic direct shift gearbox and a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. This makes the new SUV perfect for an urban as well as an off-road drive. The top-of-the-line V6 engines will expectedly produce a maximum of 295 horsepower and up to 369 lb-ft of torque. Chinese reports do mention a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but that is just informed speculation for the time being.

The Talagon is a perfect blend between an SUV and an MPV, featuring a sharper and sleeker front end coupled with a smoother, calmer, and more rounded rear. Ambient lighting and the floating center console housing the gear shifter and other important controls impart a spacious and futuristic look to the interior. And for a neat touch of elegance, the manufacturer chose to go with leather upholstery with contrast-colored stitching and attractive door panel designs.

The Talagon’s interior is quite similar to what we find inside the Volkswagen ID.4—a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument display panel, and a three-spoke steering wheel flanked with tactile push buttons grace the cabin. And worth mentioning, the large sprawling sunroof combined with the above elements provide a refreshing and serene look to the car, unseen in many SUVs in the segment.

Volkswagen seems to have done everything right with the all-new Talagon. However, much to the disappointment of full-size SUV lovers around the globe, Volkswagen has no intention of making the Talagon available outside of China. However, if the Talagon is crowned with success, customers in other markets could expect a modified variant at some point.

More details to come.
