Volkswagen ID.5 is an Electric Coupe/Crossover with Sporty Aspirations

The VW ID.5 sporty SUV/coupe shares the platform with ID.4, available in a performance-focused GTX trim with a dual-motor 295-hp powertrain.

The Volkswagen Group has been accelerating its adoption of EVs with various offerings from mini hatches, crossovers to proper acceleration thrashers in line to electrify 70% of its lineup by 2030.

The ID.5 is a more souped-up sibling of the ID.4, much like the BMW X5 and X6. The ID.4 recently made headlines by claiming the world record for the longest continuous journey by a non-solar vehicle, covering 35,000 miles of asphalt and 600+ dealerships across America.

The latest crossover/coupe retains a broadly similar styling to its sibling from the get-go. For instance, its front fascia is adorned with Audi-inspired Matrix LED headlamps and a thin light strip running across, giving it a futuristic appearance. It is further accentuated by air curtains and a radiator grille providing cooling to the powertrain underneath.

Switching over to the sides, the ID.5 features a dynamic look thanks to the sloping coupe-like roofline meeting the rear-end with an integrated spoiler. VW also offers diamond-cut alloys with 19’ rims as standard on the Pro and Pro Performance. Meanwhile, the GTX comes with 20’ wheels from the factory, although both models are eligible for a 21’ swap. The tail end is topped off with all LED lights with a horizontal light strip and complemented by a sporty bumper.

Like every other ID electric vehicle, the ID.5 adopts VW’s MEB (modular electric drive matrix) architecture. At the heart of the crossover lies a 77-kWh battery pack shared across all variants. The automaker quotes a WLTP-estimated range of 323 miles and a 0-80% charge rate in under 30 mins, courtesy of 135 kW DC charging.

Depending on the trim, the ID.5 is available in an RWD or AWD configuration. The Pro and Pro Performance models feature a single rear-mounted motor producing 172 hp and 201 hp (229 lb-ft of torque in common), respectively. However, the top-of-the-line GTX packs an additional motor on the front axle producing 108 hp for a total of 295 hp!

Moving on, the cabin also promises to be a comfortable place to unwind and relax, with the colors and materials giving the impression of a contemporary and open place. For starters, the seats, door trim, dashboard, and center console are all upholstered with a combination of Leatherette and DINAMICA microfiber surfaces. Augmenting the modern angle is a floating infotainment touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.

Furthermore, the ID.5 also comes with the latest ID software version 3.0, with a new UI and support for its very own voice assistant. Other goodies include a digital driver’s cockpit, a head-up display with AR navigation, climate control, heated and ventilated seats, etc.

Besides the overload of features, the crossover is practical with ample legroom, headroom, and a 550-liter trunk capacity. Still, the sloping roof means the cargo area won’t be as high as the ID.4. Also, it remains to see if the rear headroom suffers.

VW will manufacture the ID.5 with the rest of the lineup at the carbon-neutral plant in Zwickau. It should roll out to the rest of Europe by mid-2022, with no mention of a launch in the US market yet.

Stay tuned for more updates!
