Very Rare 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo Sells at Auction for $156000

A very rare 2002 Turbo, one of BMW’s first turbocharged cars, has been put up for sale and fetched north of $150k.

Initially launched in 1973, the BMW 2002 Turbo has been a pioneer to one of the most famous lines of cars produced by the German manufacturer.

Launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the car was brought to California in the United States of America from Switzerland in the 80s.

Powered by a turbocharged engine, the car features a five-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential sending the power to the rear wheels. The fuel-injected two-liter inline-four engine has a Getrag close-ratio transmission system attached to it.

Talking about its exterior design, the car features wheel arches that are factory fitted, a lip spoiler on the trunk, an air dam made out of fiberglass, and a set of black steel wheels. The finish of the car has been limited to the original “Chamonix” white and a special edition tri-colored ‘Turbo’ livery.

Some of the interior features include a three-spoke steering wheel, a red instrument cluster with a 240 km/h speedometer and a VDO tachometer. For a touch of ‘luxury’, the interior is completely upholstered in black vinyl.

In terms of output, the 2002 Turbo produces 170 HP and 173 lb-ft of torque, more than enough to send that little white rocket from 0-60 mph in just 7 seconds.

It comes with a tool and a first aid kit, a clean Arizona title, an owner’s book, related literature, and manuals in a binder along with a few service records. What makes the car even more worthy of the aforementioned price is the BMW classic certificate, which is a commodity only a few would like to pass on.

1974 BMW 2002 Turbo

With the first gear positioned at a dogleg position, the 2002 Turbo sure provides its new owner with an old-school analog driving experience, but one which comes at quite a bold asking price. 156,000$, to be exact.

However, the 2002 Turbo has already been dubbed as a German classic by many all around the world. In fact, as mentioned above, this very car serves as the foundation for what is now BMW’s legendary M division. Furthermore, it was also the first turbocharged production car in all of Europe, and only 1672 units were ever made.

That’s more than enough reason to make the 2002 Turbo a classic collector right there!

Unfortunately, it’s already been sold to one lucky owner. And, since there hadn’t been a 2002 Turbo on sale since 2018, if you were interested in this one, you might very well have to wait another 2-3 years to find another just as neat as this one!
