Toyota Yaris Cross Gets a Rugged Adventure Variant

The Yaris Cross Adventure should appeal to buyers interested in a more expressive look, but don’t expect improved off-road performance.

Toyota introduced the B-segment Yaris Cross compact SUV as a new member of the Yaris family, joining the hatchback. On the world debut, Toyota unveiled the SUV with the Premiere Edition trim. However, just before it goes on sale, the Yaris Cross receives a new rugged trim called Adventure. Meanwhile, Elegant will be the entry-level model.

Although there are not many differences between the Adventure and the Elegant grades’ exterior, some additional styling touches distinguish the variants from each other. The most notable is the new off-road-inspired front diffuser with a silver finish surrounding the lower air intake, adding a sense of ruggedness to the SUV.

Similarly, a tough-looking silver underbody skid plate covers the lower rear bumper and enhances Yaris Cross Adventure’s muscular design. Silver roof rails and bespoke dark grey-tinted 18-inch alloy wheels round off the SUV’s robust appearance. Toyota says that this added ruggedness is suitable “for life beyond urban streets, for time spent exploring and enjoying the great outdoors and open roads.”

The off-road styling touches continue inside, where the Yaris Cross Adventure features piano-black trimming, a black headliner, and partial leather seat upholstery. Moreover, certain elements, such as the dashboard and internal parts of the door, are decorated with warm gold linings.

Buyers who want more customization and visual appeal can opt for the Premiere Edition trim, which adds variant exclusive leather seats, powered back door with kick sensors, 18-inch machine-cut alloy wheels, a head-up display, and a variety of dual-tone color combinations. However, Premier Edition’s sales will be limited to just the first 12 months.

Toyota made no changes to the powertrain, meaning that the Yaris Cross Adventure packs the same 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine paired with an electric motor under the hood and the rear axle. As a result, the subcompact SUV features Toyota’s intelligent all-wheel-drive technology (AWD-i). The hybrid system has a peak output of 114hp (87kW).

Toyota will accept pre-orders for the Yaris Cross Adventure from Q2 of 2021, with deliveries starting from September of this year. The model won’t be available in North America.
