Toyota launches the new Mirai and Lexus LS with Advance Drive, a level 2 driver assistance system.
As the competition for self-driving and connected cars increases, leading automakers have already started heavily investing in tech-based safety features. In the hope of staying on top, Toyota comes up with 2 new models that are more than just cars interacting with drivers almost like friends, making the driving experience safer and a lot more convenient.
Interestingly, instead of taking over control from the driver, the new self-driving software allows the car to coordinate with the driver enabling them to communicate with each other for mutual assistance. The Advanced Drive AI would let the driver have complete control over the car, only switching over to autopilot when needed, thus offering a truly safe and secure driving experience.
The Toyota Advanced Drive level 2 autonomous driving system would analyze traffic conditions and take decisions accordingly. Advanced Drive can restrict the car in a specific lane, navigate a lane split, keep a safe distance from other automobiles, and change lanes to overtake other vehicles under the driver’s supervision. This AI-based function reduces the driver’s stress and allows them to focus on their surroundings to ensure a safer ride.
To do its thing, Advanced Drive relies on artificial intelligence technology based on deep learning and supports over-the-air updates to upgrade existing features or install new ones. Toyota will collect and store exterior images and real-time driving statistics in a secured server in Japan and analyze vehicle performance under ever-changing situations, using the results for future reference.
The cars would also house a driver monitor camera constantly checking the driver’s posture, engagement, and concentration. The camera would keep a strict watch on the driver’s line of sight, determining whether their eyes are open or closed and whether they are focusing on the road or not. The car would issue a buzzer warning at the slightest sign of danger, the seat belt would start vibrating, and a heads-up display would flash to alert the driver immediately.
The new Advanced Drive system will also be guided by a combination of data from a telescopic camera, a Lidar sensor, and a high-precision map to avoid collisions. The system will evaluate the possibility of an accident instantly, alert the driver and give him ample time to slow down or change directions. In case of an imminent collision, the brakes would be applied while assisting the driver in evasive maneuvers.
Among all these tech developments, Toyota did not forget to pay attention to instances where the driver could be either asleep or unconscious. After repeated warnings, if the system gets no input from the driver, it would automatically start slowing down while simultaneously warning nearby cars by activating the hazard lights. The car would eventually pull to a stop on the roadside and instantly reach out for assistance through HELPNET after unlocking the doors.
Toyota transformed a car into an almost living entity through its new Advance Drive technology. Level 2 autonomous driving will allow Toyota drivers to connect with the vehicle on an emotional level and enjoy rides with unprecedented safety and comfort levels. Coming from a reputable automaker like Toyota is, the Mirai and Lexus LS are expected to take the automotive world by storm and lay the path for fully autonomous vehicles in the future.
