The show car pays homage to the MK IV Supra and its removable roof.
Last year, Toyota unveiled the 5th generation GR Supra Heritage Edition with styling cues paying homage to the iconic 4th generation Supra that came out in 1993. This year at the SEMA360 online convention, Toyota launched a concept car called the GR Supra Sport Top. This concept now features a removable Targa top for drivers to have an open-air experience while still maintaining the performance that the Supra is known for.
The Targa top, or Aero Top as referred to by Toyota, is both a cosmetic and a functional change over last year’s Supra. Of course, it isn’t a performance-oriented feature but rather a luxurious option. The SEMA special GR Supra has a composite Targa top that can be removed in two pieces and stored away in the trunk. The driver can also remotely release the roof hatches, helping them to take off the top without too much hassle.
The Targa top Supra is a welcome change since the standard Supra hardtop has a dark interior, which could make the cabin feel a bit claustrophobic. When it comes to driving dynamics, Toyota Team Manager Marty Schwerter mentioned that the Sport Top would have a stiffened chassis to compensate for the lack of a solid roof. Given that the current generation Supra was co-developed with BMW and shares underpinnings with the Z4 roadster, we’re certain that Toyota’s engineers didn’t have to radically tweak the chassis to achieve satisfactory results.
Customers should be eyeing the Sport Top model whenever it goes into production, as it aims to provide a luxurious experience of a convertible with the sportiness of the Supra.
As for now, Toyota has not provided any details regarding the availability of the Sport Top.
More details to come.
