Tesla Revives One-Pedal Driving and Regenerative Braking — But Is It a Good Idea?

Tesla brings back regenerative braking to its EVs via an OTA software update.

Tesla’s latest software update brings an adjustable regenerative braking feature, now available to all its vehicles, allowing drivers to personalize the amount of deceleration applied when the accelerator pedal is released.

Interestingly, Tesla models used to offer regenerative braking, yet it was not adjustable and was set to the strongest setting by default. No need to say that, just like its rather controversial yoke steering wheel, many were not fans, and it became an unused feature for most. Hence in 2020, the EV maker removed the option entirely until it was reworked properly — and the updated version is finally here, now with variable settings.

The latest update allows users to choose between “standard” and “low” settings depending on their preferences. The “standard” option provides maximum braking power, enough to slow the car down immediately upon releasing the gas pedal. Meanwhile, the “low” setting allows the vehicle to coast further and take longer to come to a complete stop. Despite not being as beneficial regarding battery capacity, this setting is ideal for anyone trying to get used to the new regenerative braking feature.

Keep in mind that for regenerative braking to work, drivers need to adapt to a new “unnatural” driving technique using only the gas pedal. That way, every time the accelerator is released, the regenerative braking feature will essentially always try to slow you down, converting the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity and storing it in the battery. As a result, your EV will be much more efficient as stored energy will increase the total range while reducing wear on your brakes.

That said, there are a few concerns regarding why this system may not be ideal, depending on the road conditions. For instance, on slippery, wet, or snowy pavement, regenerative braking could cause the wheels to lock up, making it difficult to control the car. Luckily, that’s something that should now be possible to mitigate, thanks to the possibility of adjusting the setting to a comfortable level for the driver.
