Report: Camaro to Be Replaced by an Electric Sedan in 2024

Can you imagine Chevrolet Camaro becoming an electric sedan? Well, it looks like it’s exactly what’s about to happen with GM’s trademark sports car.

Of course, there have been numerous reports and speculations killing the Chevrolet Camaro already, which seemed pretty accurate to some extent but always ended up vanishing into thin air. However, this time, reports claim that the Camaro and Malibu midsize sedan would retire, only to come back in a new form. And rumors have it that the new Camaro would not be a muscle car with an internal combustion engine. On the contrary, the upcoming Camaro could be an electric sedan come 2024. If this report is to be believed, we will witness a zero-emission Camaro in a form never seen before.

Such a change will for sure shock Camaro lovers, but a four-door electric sedan could make things interesting. In its entire history, starting from way back in 1967 when it was first launched, the Camaro has always been associated with two doors. One thing is sure; if such a massive change occurs, many die-hard fans will be disappointed—to say the least.

At the same time, GM, along with the whole automotive industry, is on the verge of a transition from internal combustion engines to all-electric powertrains. General Motors has officially confirmed that it’s going all-electric by 2035 and has started investing a lot of resources in the new electrification technologies as well as autonomous driving.

“I don’t know how GM will be able to actually make this transition without seeing at some point a bit of a volume drop that might be recovered when EVs are stronger,” said Stephanie Brinley, principal analyst at IHS Markit.

Even though it’s shocking for purists, reviving the Camaro in the form of an electric sedan is not necessarily a bad idea. To keep up with the trend and changing market demands, Ford brought the electric version of the Mustang in form of the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, so the Camaro can be well marketed as an electric sedan. And as it turns out, the electric Mustang even outperformed the ICE Mustang in sales. We can potentially hope for the same with the Camaro. Not to mention that Dodge is currently designing the “world’s first electric muscle car” to be launched in 2024.

And it’s only getting started.
