Pagani Utopia Is An 852-HP Stick-Shift Hypercar That Shows What EVs Lack

The Pagani Utopia is built to be the ultimate, no-compromise driving machine, proving its name true with an optional manual transmission and a V12 engine.

When Pagani asked its customers what they wanted from a new supercar, they said three things — “simplicity, lightness, and pleasure of driving.” So, Pagani did what made the most sense to them — it forwent hybrid powers and batteries and chose an old-school V12 engine paired up with either an automatic or a gated manual seven-speed transmission.

Pagani Huyara’s successor, the 2023 Utopia, gets its name from a famous literary work — “The Utopia,” by Sir Thomas More. The word essentially means “ideal world,” and the automaker has worked hard for the past six years to perfect the styling of the hypercar. Minimalist and recognizable as Pagani, the Utopia is a culmination of a fancy supercar with simple aesthetics.

Designed to “radiate simplicity,” the Utopia features the classic four central exhausts, a new bridge spoiler, and impressive vents, wings, and splitters that provide advanced aerodynamics. Pagani has opted for “flowing and curvaceous” lines for the car’s body to arrive at a ceaseless design.

The supercar’s body is something to be admired — the Utopia is sporting a monocoque that deals with materials like Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62, all unique creations from Pagani. The bodywork is of an “A-class carbon fiber,” a new material stiffer than before. As a result, the Utopia only weighs 2,822 pounds — genuinely exceptional for a modern hypercar.

In the center of the Utopia lies a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 producing 852 hp at 6,000 rpm and 811 lb-ft of torque between 2,800 and 5,900 rpm. Pagani thought electrification wasn’t necessary, and we tend to agree — putting more weight would’ve only destroyed the driving dynamics.

But the biggest surprise is that Pagani offers a 7-speed gated manual as an option, making it one of the most powerful cars with a stick shift. However, if you think driving such a powerful machine with a manual is hard work, the Utopia also comes with a single-clutch automatic with helical gears, which Pagani says provides ultra-quick shifts.

Furthermore, an intricate complexity of springs and dampers makes up the incredibly advanced adjustable suspension, accompanied by forged aluminum wishbones. As for the brake system, we can see Brembo-sourced six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston ones at the rear.

Complimenting this system are the 21 and 22-inch wheels that decorate the front and the rear, respectively. The wheels are equipped with special extractors that keep the hot air away from the carbon-ceramic brake discs. Wrapping the wheels are Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires explicitly designed for the Utopia.

If you have your eye on the Utopia, you should hurry – Pagani plans to manufacture only 99 of these beautifully crafted monsters, each costing around £2.2 million.
