Pagani Huayra Tricolore Arrives with 829 HP and a $6.7M Price Tag

With the Huayra Tricolore, Pagani pays tribute to the Frecce Tricolori on their 60th anniversary.

In 1992, Horacio Pagani set out to create the most beautiful masterpieces of automotive engineering, drawing a big part of his inspiration from aeronautics and daring skyline acrobats. Interestingly, the Aermacchi MB-339A P.A.N served as the basis for the Huayra Tricolore — it could fly at a top speed of up to 558 mph and perform extreme aerobatic maneuvers thanks to its advanced aerodynamics. As a result of such advancements, the engine could respond at any speed and in any sort of orientation in the sky.

Much like its aeronautical counterpart, the Huayra Tricolore has been given fastidious attention to detail, from the complex exterior design all the way down to every single bolt holding the structure of the car together. Given the advancements in aerodynamics since the Huayra’s initial arrival in 2012, the Tricolore underwent some changes to manipulate the airflow as efficiently as possible.

Pagani Huayra Tricolore

Starting off at the front, a new splitter with a sharper aero profile and a bumper with side vents work in unison to enhance downforce capabilities along with improved cooling efficiency. The air coming from the front is channeled smoothly from under the body and propelled out through the rear diffuser. The one-piece rear wing and supports are carved from a single sheet of carbon fiber, mimicking the tail fin from the MB-339A. Taking the attention to detail even further, Pagani included a pitot tube on the front hood, a device used to measure macroscopic air speed and aerodynamic condition of the aircraft, indicated by the variation in dynamic pressure.

The chassis was manufactured using advanced composite materials such as Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62, giving it much higher performance and strength when compared to a traditional carbon fiber monocoque chassis.

Having such rigidity sure helps though, as the Huayra is powered by a 6-liter twin-turbo V12 developed specifically by Mercedes-AMG for Pagani. It produces 840 HP and 811 lb-ft of torque, which is harnessed through a 7-speed Xtrac Sequential gearbox and sent to the rear wheels via an electromechanical differential. The Huayra has impeccable handling as well, with forged aluminum alloy twin independent triangle arms supported with electronically controlled coil springs and shocks.

Stopping power comes from ventilated carbon-ceramic discs actuated by 6-piston Brembo calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the rear. The super sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires help maximize the potential of the Huayra Tricolore.

The aero-inspired theme is carried forward in great detail in the interior as well. Recalling the theme from the Zonda Tricolore 10 years ago, this special Huayra gets two-tone coloring in white and blue with the Italian white, red, and green stripes on leather inserts. The 4-point seat belts and headrests feature a tribute logo to the Frecce Tricolori, the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force. The gear shift knob is made out of a single block of aluminum and carbon, which is then milled through a 5-axis numerical control center and given a special finishing treatment.

Like the Zonda Tricolore, the Huayra is also limited to just three pieces, for the three most important members of the aerobatic troupe: The Commander, Head of Formation, and Soloist.

The Tricolore is up for grabs at €5.5 million + taxes ($6.75 million), with further personalization options on offer.
