Nissan dropped a video showcasing the transformation of the legendary Skyline GT-R R32 into an eco-friendly ride!
Many car manufacturers are already competing to revive their legendary cars with electric technology, and it seems like Nissan is now jumping on the bandwagon.
A post uploaded on the brand’s official Twitter and Youtube pages caused quite a stir among the public. The video is essentially a 20-second teaser showing the rear-end of an “unidentified” car, followed by the rumbling sound of a cold start — no need to say that despite the rather quick glance, it didn’t take much more for everyone to realize it was the legendary Skyline GT-R R32.
Nothing special here, right?
But wait! The really shocking part occurs right before the end of the video, when “R32 EV” appears on screen — yep, EV!
While nothing has been confirmed yet, it’s safe to assume Nissan just teased an upcoming GT-R R32 EV conversion project.
That said, the fact that we could still hear the rumble of the R32’s turbocharged 2.6-liter inline-6 RB26DETT was pretty head-scratching. Aren’t EVs supposed to be silent? Could it just be an artificial sound effect Nissan created for its upcoming electrified Godzilla?
Sadly, those questions will remain unanswered until we get more details from the Japanese automaker. Still, we know the R32 EV would at least retain its original design.
Nissan hasn’t mentioned anything regarding its powertrain options either. Yet, there’s a good chance it would be equipped with an all-wheel-drive system, just like Nissan’s latest electric crossover, the 2023 Ariya E-4orce, a system programmed to mimic the superb ATTESA E-TS found in the R32 Skyline.
Worth noting, the project originated from the idea of a Nissan engineer who is a big fan of the legendary sports coupe and wants to see it come back to life, albeit with modern technology. “I want to build a more exciting car by adding the latest electrification technology that I am involved with to my favorite car,” he said.
Turning the Skyline into an EV may sure not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it was to be expected. Indeed, Nissan COO Ashwani Gupta has previously stated that the GT-R would eventually go electric. But whether the statement referred to this R32 EV or upcoming productions of the R36 still remains uncertain. All we know is we are one step closer to seeing for ourselves what an electric GT-R may look like — whether you like it or not.
