Mitsubishi has unveiled a significantly upgraded Outlander PHEV with a larger gasoline engine, bigger battery, and a longer 24-mile all-electric range.
Equipped with an entirely redesigned powertrain, the 2021 PHEV will feature a more efficient engine, a highly-capable rear motor, and an enhanced battery pack.
However, the 2021 Outlander PHEV is based on the previous model, not the recently-announced 2022 Outlander. As a result, while Mitsubishi improved the powertrain, you’re getting a vehicle that first launched in 2012.
Regardless, the Outlander PHEV’s gets a performance boost from the improved 2.4-liter inline-four, good for 126 hp and 201 Nm of torque. Also, the electric motor now produces 94 HP, 13 HP more than before
Moreover, Mitsubishi also employed a larger 13.8kWh battery, compared to the previous 12kWh. This move also increased federal tax credits, now up to $6,587.
The combined output of the refreshed 2021 Outlander PHEV reaches 221 hp, which is not much, especially if you compared it to the Toyota RAV4 Prime and its 302 HP. The Outlander PHEV also provides 24 miles of electric-only range, which is simply not competitive in today’s market. Still, it might reduce the frequency of gas station visits.
Nonetheless, adding to the list of changes is the software upgrade. Notably, Mitsubishi changed the programming for “improved synchronization between battery and engine,” reducing noise, vibration, and harshness. Besides, the Outlander PHEV offers new Sport and Snow driving modes.
Overall, the 2021 Outlander PHEV is undoubtedly better than before, but only customers will tell if that’s enough. One redeeming feature of the plug-in SUV is the starting price of $36,295, which is lower than most competitors. However, I’d recommend waiting for a PHEV version of the all-new model Mitsubishi introduced just a few days ago.
