Unfortunately, it’s still uncertain whether the EQC 4×4² electric off-roader will be put into production.
In the highly anticipated electric 4×4 off-roader segment, American brands have held the most hype, with the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck, GMC Hummer EV, Ford F-150 Electric, and Rivian R1T. However, Mercedes-Benz might not be far from entering this highly competitive niche with its contender, the EQC 4X42 EV off-roader concept.
Mercedes-Benz recently released a video of the EQC 4X42 concept car going off the beaten paths, showing off the EV’s off-road capabilities. Based on the EQC 400 EV crossover, we can be sure that this concept means serious business, especially since Mercedes-Benz decided to use the 4X42 tag instead of the classic G-Wagon. The EQC 4X42 would be using portal axles, good enough to climb over rocks and slopes by the looks of it.
The EQC 4×42 is a good 2.5 inches taller than a standard G-Wagon. This translates to approach, departure, and breakover angles of 31.8, 33, and 24.2 degrees, respectively. Wading depth is also quite generous at 400mm, although not class-leading. The wheels are quite large at 20-inches and are wrapped with big, knobby tires. To accommodate such massive rubber, the 4×42 also has larger fender flares and deeper wheel arches.
The EQC 4×42 is expected to perform similarly to the ICE-powered E 400 All-Terrain 4×42. On the inside, the beefed-up EQC is similar to its EQC 400 foundation. That being said, creature comforts like the dual-screen layout with the class-leading MBUX connected infotainment system and a luxurious cabin remain unchanged.
The powertrain, too, remains the same as in the standard EQC – a 408 horsepower dual-motor setup producing an impressive 562lb-ft torque. The battery is also the same 80 kWh lithium-ion pack, providing a range of up to 220 miles on the EQC 400.
However, MB has clearly mentioned that the EQC 4×42 is still a concept far from the production line. Consequently, the German manufacturer might still alter the powertrain and range to make it more off-road friendly. However, Benz fans will have to wait longer for this German electric off-roader to make it on (and off) the streets.
