Kia EV5 Concept Previews The Brand’s Upcoming Compact Electric SUV

The EV9’s little brother is a part of the brand’s future sustainable mobility and will initially be launched in China.

Shortly after the official EV9’s release, Kia is going full steam ahead with new releases and recently announced yet another electric SUV concept coming, the EV5. The futuristic compact EV premiered this week at the Kia Chinese EV Day event.

Design-wise, the EV5 Concept looks dashing with sharp lines supporting the vehicle’s aerodynamics. And while Kia hasn’t shared any measurement details yet, we reckon it’ll be more compact than the EV9 launched last week. Still, the two SUVs undoubtedly look quite similar, especially since both sport the same boxy shape and general design elements.

Like its bigger brother, the EV5 also adopts Kia’s ‘Digital Tiger Face’ front fascia with vertical headlights. It also has similar window shapes from the A to C-pillar and a pretty identical rear-end design. At this point, we can safely assume the EV5 will be the 5-seater version of the EV9, but we’ll need to wait for Kia to reveal the production version and confirm that.

In typical “concept car” fashion, the automaker went wild with the EV5’s cabin. Opening the suicide doors, you’ll see a highly aesthetic and minimalist cabin, with swiveling seats and large windows all around, making the cabin feels bright and spacious.

That said, Kia kept silent regarding the powertrain or platform that will be used. However, we assume it will use the E-GMP 800V platform like Kia’s other EV models, proven to provide a high-range capability, fast charging technology, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) system support.

The President and CEO of Kia Corporation, Ho Sung Song, says that Kia plans to enter the EV market in China with the EV5 Concept — a part of its movement to become a leader in sustainable mobility solutions for a better future for everyone. “Kia will enrich our customers’ lifestyles and enable them to pursue personal adventures by setting fresh standards for dynamic and efficient electric driving,” says Kia’s boss.

Thus, the production model of the EV5 Concept is planned to launch by the end of the year in China, and unfortunately, there is no further information regarding whether Kia will offer it in other markets. In the meantime, we’ll. have to patiently wait for the arrival of this stunning EV on our side of the ocean, which, hopefully, is in the plans for the Korean carmaker.
