Hyundai to Launch World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Semi-Truck

The Korean company bets big on hydrogen-electric propulsion, especially for its commercial vehicles.

Hyundai will unveil the first hydrogen semi-truck on its official YouTube channel by streaming live at 10:00 AM KST on October 14, 2020.

The XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck is Hyundai’s idea of green commercial transport. The vehicle can carry the weight of a usual diesel truck while only taking about 10 minutes to recharge, which is much faster than any comparable electric semi-trucks. Another advantage is the 250-miles (400 km) range, thanks to seven 350-bar tanks storing 32-kg of hydrogen.

Apart from the advanced powertrain, Hyundai’s semi-truck has other hi-tech features, like the smartphone mirroring for the infotainment. The truck is big on safety as well — the FCA (Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist) protects from front collisions, the ESC system ensures stability in the corners. Also, the LDW warns the driver if he leaves the lane without a turn signal.

Hyundai has already shipped seven units to Switzerland back in July and is expected to deliver 50 semi-trucks in Europe by the end of this year. Ultimately, the Korean automaker aims to ship 1600 trucks by the year 2025.

Further down the line, Hyundai aims to expand its lineup to three fuel-cell trucks, a medium-duty truck, and two heavy-duty trucks and ship 12,000 semi-trucks to the US and 20,000 units in China by 2030.

Hyundai will reveal more details about the roadmap and hydrogen tech at the launch event on October 14, 2020.
