Hopium Machina is a Stunning French Hydrogen-Powered Sedan

A new French carmaker wants to prove that hydrogen is the future.

While all eyes are focused on EVs, companies like Hyundai, Toyota, and now Hopium, the brainchild of Olivier Lombard, a French racing driver, explore an entirely new direction for an environmentally sustainable future —Hydrogen.

Announced as a “real technological breakthrough,” the Hopium Machina is a luxury hydrogen-powered sedan with an avant-grade design. The Machina’s sleek bodyline is quite futuristic, features stunning aerodynamic wheels, and a panoramic glass roof. It looks minimalistic, yet definitely opulent.

Hopium’s prototype also features a rakish windshield, hidden door handles, recessed luggage compartment, and stylish taillights. Meanwhile, air vents in the back should prevent air from accumulating in the rear wheel wells. Of course, following Hopium’s futuristic approach, rearview mirrors have been replaced by a set of cameras.

The Machina also comes with a powertrain matching its striking looks. The motor produces 493 hp (368kW/ 500PS), which should be more than enough for exhilarating acceleration. Thanks to the hydrogen fuel cell, the Machina will have a range of 621 miles (approx. 1000Km). The most significant advantage of the system will be the quick refueling times, at around three minutes.

Oliver Lombard claimed that the final prototype should be unveiled next year and go into production by 2026. The founder is also confident that Hopium’s first creation will become a global benchmark for hydrogen-powered vehicles. The company also plans to collaborate with other innovative companies regarding the possibilities of using hydrogen as an alternative fuel.

If everything goes as planned, Hopium will build the Machina in France and distribute it to China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and the United States.

Price for the Machina is expected to range between $128,877 and $164,025.
