Mood Ring Paint Makes This Audi A4 Look Straight Bonkers

DipYourCar painted an Audi A4 with a heat-sensitive “mood ring” color, and the result is quite eye-catching—but not to everyone’s liking.

Crazy car paints are nothing new. Some wrap their car, some repaint it in unusual colors or dual-tones, and some even cover it with precious stones. Modern technology has created countless possibilities to go all-out on your car and personalize it to your liking.

However, nobody had ever gone full “mood ring,” yet!

Popular YouTube channel DipYourCar has come up with another example of wild creativity. Fonzie, the guy behind the channel, sprayed an Audi A4  with temperature-sensitive paint, quite similar to those mood rings that were so popular in the nineties.

As a result, the paint shows different colors at various temperatures.

To make sure the new paint can be reverted to its original color, the A4 was first covered with a base coat of Plastidip. Then, Fonzie painted the A4 with eight coats of a special pigment that, just like the mood ring, contains thermotropic liquid crystals, making it highly heat-sensitive. So sensitive that color variations were visible as soon as the car backed up inside the garage. Moreover, the video shows that mere interactions like touching the surface with a hand change its color.

Worth mentioning, Fonzie advised viewers to use another layer of protective sealer over the mood ring paint for long term usage. He also made it clear that this project was just for fun. More testing would, of course, be necessary before using the paint on serious projects, as its durability is not yet verified.

That being said, would you really want your car in this color permanently? I personally think that mood rings were left behind somewhere in the late nineties/early noughties for a reason.
