Genesis GV60 Arrives as a 483 HP EV Crossover with a Drift Mode

The Genesis GV60 will be a luxurious version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, with a more upmarket interior and better creature comfort.

Genesis initially started as a luxury saloon, albeit still under the Hyundai brand at the time. It set a benchmark for affordability and earned a reputation in the executive segment for about 7-8 years, prompting the automaker to create a separate brand. So far, the company houses five models in its stable, including the GV70, GV80, G70, G80, and G90. Genesis recently announced an electrified version of the G80 and will now enter the electric crossover territory with the GV60.

Genesis engineered its newest entrant with a futuristic outlook and sustainability in mind. The front fascia displays Genesis’ signature styling with four slim LED headlamps, the company emblem, and an ICE-like grille. And interestingly, while a significant portion of the grille itself is covered by plastic, there are vents at the bottom to regulate the temperature of the powertrain components.

Furthermore, the Genesis GV60 receives a sleek wrap-around clamshell hood covering the wheels and the side profile is also streamlined with a sloping coupe-like roofline, integrated door handles, and a hidden camera in the B-pillar to unlock the doors thanks to facial recognition. The GV60’s design flows towards the rear-end, culminating with a  ducktail spoiler and pretty sleek Sabretooth-shaped split taillights.

Aside from offering a contemporary design, Genesis also put a lot of work into the powertrains. Sitting on Hyundai’s proprietary e-GMP (Electric Globa lModular Platform), the GV60 is equipped with a 400/800 V system on a 77.8 kWh battery pack on all trim levels. The RWD base model features a single electric motor that zaps out 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, providing a range of 284.5 miles on one charge.

Moving up a notch, the GV60 AWD is equipped with a 214.5 hp rear motor and a 100 hp front unit, for a total of 314.5 hp and 448 lb-ft of torque. However, there is an even more powerful version that produces 430 hp, competing directly with the Tesla Model Y Long Range.

If that wasn’t enough, Genesis added to the sports car experience by offering a boost mode with additional juice for 10 secs and a grin-worthy drift mode for a little sideways fun. Additionally, the Genesis GV60 is fitted with multi-link front and rear axles, e-LSD (Limited slip diff), and R-MDPS steering for an even sportier experience.

Of course, the cabin got its fair share of attention too! At the heart of the GV60 lies a magical crystal ball-shaped dial that flips over to reveal the elegantly shaped Shift By Wire. Continuing with the futuristic and sustainable vision, Genesis upholstered the cabin in a light beige theme based on environmental-friendly materials, including plant-based leather on the seats, door armrests, center console, and crash pads. The rest of the cabin, such as the seat covers and door trims is wrapped with a fabric made from recycled PET bottles.

There is plenty of tech on board, with an integrated and connected display (driver cockpit and infotainment) with OTA updates, fingerprint and facial recognition system for keyless operation, a heads-up-display (HUD), and Genesis’ full suite of driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Genesis will first launch the GV60 in Korea, but other markets should follow soon. The company is yet to announce pricing details.
